When Jesus tells the man to go and sell everything so that he will have treasure in heaven … what do you picture? Gold? Jewels? Crowns? Isn’t our treasure Jesus? Our relationship with Jesus. An eternity in Heaven with Jesus, the most precious treasure in all the universe?

Our Bible text tells of a man searching for something. Matthew tells us he was a young man; Luke describes him as a ruler, or what we would call an aristocrat. And Matthew, Mark, & Luke all tell us he was rich. Today he’s often called the Rich Young Ruler.

Receiving Treasure In Heaven

Our treasure on earth eclipses our desire for "treasure in heaven." Only God can give us a desire for "treasure in heaven." Therefore, we must forsake our treasure on earth and follow Jesus to receive "treasure in heaven."
