Summary: We look everywhere else rather than to Jesus for the answers to life's problems. But Jesus has--and IS!--the answer to our most important questions. Therefore, we must find our answers in Jesus.

THE MOST IMPORTANT THING OF ALL

Mark 10:17-31

What is wrong?—Looking elsewhere—rather than

to Jesus—for answers.

What is true?—Jesus has—and IS!—the answer

to our most important questions.

What to do—We must find our answers in Jesus.

How?—By coming to understand three things:

I The Most Important Question (Mark 12:28)

1 Asked in the Right Spirit (12:28a)

‘…and seeing that he answered them well…’ (v. 28a).

2 Asked of the Right Person (12:28b)

‘...asked him, “Which commandment is the most important of all”’ (v. 28b).

‘The duty which God requireth of man, is obedience to his revealed will’ (Shorter Catechism Q/A 39).

II The Most Important Answer (Mark 12:29-31)

1 Love Is the Heart of the Law (12:29-31a)

‘…You shall love the Lord your God…. You shall love your neighbor’ (vv. 30, 31).

2. Love Is the Point of the Law (12:31b)

‘There is no other commandment greater than these’ (v. 31b).

‘The sum of the Ten Commandments is, to love the Lord our God with all our heart, with all our soul, with all our strength, and with all our mind; and our neighbor as ourselves’ (Shorter Catechism Q/A 42).

III The Most Important Response (Mark 12:32-34)

1. Our Response Is to Understand What God Requires (12:32-33)

‘And the scribe said to him, “You are right, Teacher. You have truly said…”’ (v. 32).

2 Our Response Is to Believe What God Provides (12:34)

‘And when Jesus saw that he answered wisely, he said to him, “You are not far from the kingdom of God”’ (v. 34).

‘The Scriptures principally teach, what man is to believe concerning God, and what duty God requires of man’ (Shorter Catechism Q/A 3).
