When we examined the word "atonement," we discovered that the idea of compensation is paramount in the Old Testament. In the New Testment we discovered that Jesus is the compensation for our sins, and to offer anything else is to insult the Spirit of grace.

ADVOCATE Last week we examined the word atonement, and we found that the word is rooted in the Old Testament, where one who committed sin had to offer a sacrifice to compensate for the sin. We closed with 1 John 2:1-2, as translated by the NIV My dear children, I write this to you so that you ...read more

The miracle of transformation begins when we are willing to offer Jesus obedience without reservation; service without limitation; and participation without intimidation. Jesus can take what we will do and do with it that we can’t do.

Jesus was on a mission to save the world, the greatest mission in the history of mankind. Yet, he took the time to attend a wedding and take part in the festivities. We may be tempted to think we should not take time out from our important work for social occasions. But maybe these social occasions ...read more

What was the Scapegoat, and can it's function somehow be applied to Jesus? Christ made a one-time sacrifice and atonement to cover all sins. There is no more need for a scapegoat, as the Lamb of God became the final sin offering.

I want to begin our sermon this morning by asking if you’ve ever before heard the word “scapegoat.” This term was coined by William Tyndale, the first great English Bible translator, who I will discuss a little further later on in our message. After Tyndale, the word came to be used for a person, ...read more

Does the Bible teach that the only way it can help all people face tomorrow in the power of God’s love is by becoming a diverse and inclusive congregation – multiracial, multigenerational and multicultural – offering a warm, non-threatening environment to all?

Many churches see themselves as a place that, no matter where one is on their ...read more
