John the Baptist is presented in the prologue of John's gospel as the prophesied forerunner to the arrival of God's Messiah. He prepared the people of Israel for the Messiah by preaching repentance and obedience. Repentance was needed then, and in these last days as well.

What do people want when they are hurting? They want God’s Word that gives comfort. Here in Isaiah is a chapter on comfort. This chapter is announcing the coming Christ. He is our source of comfort. We can certainly take comfort from God’s Word in Isaiah 40.

Lasting Comfort

We all want comfort. And God offers it to us as he did to the exiled Israelites. We can take comfort that our sin has been paid in full, that God's word outlasts our problems, and that God is coming again. Forgiven, forever, for sure!
