It was an awful ordeal Joseph put them through, but it was worth it, for Joseph learned that people can change. God knows this and that is why He is long suffering and puts up with people for a long time.

Joseph was separated from his family at the age of 17 not because of war, but because of the wicked jealousy of his own brothers. In their jealousy they sold Joseph into slavery and presented his ornamented coat to their father. God used this for his purposes.

Joseph had to choose to forgive his brothers. He saw God's sovereignty in the betrayal, he saw the same nature was in him and he tested their hearts with his brother. He forgave and never brought up the subject again.
