As I read through this passage, it appears that Elijah is testing Elisha. Look at verse 2. He said to Elisha, “...Tarry here, I pray thee; for the Lord hath sent me to Beth-el...”

But notice Elisha’s response in that same verse, “...As the Lord liveth, and as thy soul liveth, I will not leave thee...”Then look at verse 4. Elijah seems to test Elisha again.
