In A Slow and Certain Light, Elizabeth Elliot tells of two adventurers who stopped by to see her, all loaded with equipment for the rain forest east of the Andes. They sought no advice, just a few phrases to converse with the Indians. She writes, "Sometimes we come to God as the two

BE A LINE-GUIDE
When they were teaching me to march in the Navy, for a while until they learned that I have eye problems (go figure) they made me a line-guide. A line-guide is in the front corner of the ranks and marches straight, so that everyone else can mark their place off him.

NO LIGHT ON THE RUNWAY
Consider the experience of a friend of mine, who was a recreational pilot when he was younger. On one occasion, he flew his single-engine plane toward his home base at a small country airport.
Unfortunately, he waited too long to start back and arrived in the vicinity of

FOCUSING ON THE LIGHT
"We were on shipboard," relates a captain's wife, "lying in a Southern harbor. We were obliged, first to make our way ashore. The waves were rolling heavily. I became frightened at the thought of attempting it, when one man came to me, saying, 'Do not be afraid: I will take

There is a third property of light. Light can show you the way. One summer as a kid I went into the woods with my cousins. One was older and one was younger. Stevie Joe was 2 years younger and Jerry was already in his teens, about 6 years older. Jerry decided to keep out after dark and then

A guide at Blarney Castle in Ireland was explaining to some visitors that his job was not always as pleasant as it seemed. He told them about a group of disgruntled tourists he had taken to the castle earlier in the week. “These people were complaining about everything,” he said. “They didn’t like
