La Campana Al Gato? — The Bell On The Cat?
Contributed by Fernando Ocampo on Jun 3, 2008 (message contributor)
(ENGLISH TRANSLATION FOLLOWS)
There was once a colony of mice who lived in a comfortable home. One day a cat came to live with the mice. This caused a big problem, because the cat chased the mice all the time day and night. So the mice were always frightened of the cat.
Tired of a life troubled by the fear of being persecuted, the mice called a meeting to see how to resolve this difficulty. Thus emerged a number of ideas and suggestions, but none appeared to be the best solution. Suddenly a young mouse stood in the middle of the meeting and said:
"We all know that the problem is how the cat sneaks up on us without making the slightest noise. But what if we receive a warning? I suggest that you put a bell around the cat's neck while he sleeps. Then we will know when it is coming so we can hide."
Excited about what appeared to be the solution, all the mice shouted for joy, until an elderly mouse stood up and asked, "Who among us will put the bell on the cat?" A profound silence was present. None dared make the attempt and risk. So they decided to do nothing and chose to live always frightened by the cat.
