[109]. A MESSAGE FROM A POEM – GROANING TAKES ITS TOLL ON ME (Psalm 6)

This poem is a retelling in poetic form of Psalm 6. We can gather from the Psalm that David was having a dreadful time. This is the beauty of the Psalms, for they cover the whole range of human emotions and failures, and because of that they are God’s provision for us.

Just look at these verses – {{Psalm 6:2-3 “Be gracious to me, O LORD, for I AM PINING AWAY. Heal me, O LORD, for MY BONES ARE DISMAYED, and MY SOUL IS GREATLY DISMAYED, but You, O LORD - how long?”}}

{{Psalm 6:6-8 “I am WEARY WITH MY SIGHING. Every night I MAKE MY BED SWIM. I DISSOLVE MY COUCH WITH MY TEARS. My EYE HAS WASTED AWAY with grief. IT HAS BECOME OLD because of all my adversaries. Depart from me, all you who do iniquity, for the LORD has heard THE VOICE OF MY WEEPING.”}}

At the end of the Psalm faith revives and David could write this – {{Psalm 6:9-10 “The LORD has heard my supplication. The LORD receives my prayer. All my enemies shall be ashamed and greatly dismayed. They shall turn back and they shall suddenly be ashamed.”}}

The Poem attempts to capture some of the emotions of the Psalm.

GROANING TAKES ITS TOLL ON ME (Psalm 6)

I am weary with my sighing.

My couch with tears is dissolving.

Ev’ry night my bed is swimming,

And with grief my eye is wasting.

==============================

Lord, in Your anger, do not rebuke me;

Neither Your hot displeasure, let me see.

I am weak, and I am irritated.

Heal me for my bones are agitated.

Have mercy, O Lord, for my soul is vexed.

It needs deliverance for it’s perplexed.

In death I have no more memory of You;

In the grave, who there can thank You anew?

Grief has consumed me; the enemy is here.

Depart, workers of evil; don’t come near.

My supplication, the dear Lord has heard,

And the Lord will receive my prayerful word.

Shame and vexation on my enemies.

Let them return and face their penalties.

==============================

I am weary with my groaning.

My tears on my couch I’m owning.

My grievous eye keeps on moaning.

Enemies have kept me droning.

    We live in nation of "rights" but if my rights conflict with yours we can end up in court, in a church split or in a family division. How do we avoid letting our desire to defend our rights to ruin our lives?
