Genesis 11:10 – Gen. 12:5

Shem (oldest son of Noah, in the lineage of David, Joseph, and Jesus Christ)

We note Shem’s genealogy both in Genesis 10 and here in Genesis 11; why? – Abraham and eventually Israel came from the lineage of Shem; Genesis 11 gives details and sets up Abraham

Shem >>> Eber had twins which divided the clan!

Gen. 10:25 > Joktan >>>>>> Sheba, Ophir, Havilah and Jobab = likely Arab nations

Gen. 11:16 > Peleg >>>>>> Terah > Abram (Abraham) = Jewish Nation

2 years after the flood, Shem at 100 years old (of 500) fathered Arphaxad, then many more!

Arphaxad >>>>>> for many years (you can do the math) >>>>>> Abram!

A couple of notes to ponder:

- It was possible for Noah, Shem, and Abram to be alive on earth at the same time!

- There were 9 generations between Noah and Abram!

- There was a span of at least 500 years!

- Besides the names mentioned (likely other people born between the generations)

What are significant things about these notes? – God allowed the world population to increase in numbers without intervention creating many tribes and nations

v27: Terah had sons Abram, Nahor, and Haran;

Haran was Lot’s father; Haran died in Ur

v29-30: Nahor’s wife had kids BUT Abram’s wife Sarai was barren!

Knowing in future Scriptures Sarai (Sarah) birth Isaac, what’s significant here? – God has a plan and God can directly intervene

v31: Terah took son Abram, grandson Lot, daughter in law Sarai to go to Canaan

Terah was only able to go to a place called Haran.

Looks like Nahor’s family stayed in Ur.

What do we note in Gen. 12:1-4? – Hebrews 11:8-12!
