Peter had denied Jesus three times. Jesus asks Peter is he truly loved him. Jesus may need to ask us the same thing. Peter didn't love Jesus as much as he thought he did. Do we love Jesus as much as we think we do?

“DO YOU LOVE ME?” John 21:15-23 1) “Do you love me?” (15-17). The charcoal fire connection in 21:9. It is interesting that the Greek word for charcoal fire is found in only two places in the New Testament. Here in this story where Jesus is cooking fish for the ...read more

What was Jesus fishing for from Peter?

The Fishing Trip John 21:1-23 Introduction I’m going fishing. At least here in eastern Tennessee, this sounds like something one does when they want to relax. And when said in a group, it is an informal invitation for others to join. However, if we were to think this the case of Peter and the ...read more

    Peter, mind your own business

Sermon Jn 21. 19-25 In our Gospel reading today, Peter asks Jesus what is going to happen to the Apostle John, one to the two Sons of Thunder, one of Jesus’ inner circle of three. And stunningly, Jesus rebukes Peter and basically tells him to mind his own business. I wonder why Peter asked the ...read more

John 21 describes the dynamics of discipleship

I am not a good letter writer. It seems as if I always leave something out. When I do write letters, I often have to add a P.S. This final chapter of John's gospel seems to a postscript. The closing verses of John 20 seem to conclude the book. Then, as an apparent postscript, chapter 21 is ...read more

We should accept it as axiomatic that God’s dealings with our fellow-disciples are no concern of ours. Our business is to watch our motives carefully, to keep our eyes on the Lord whom we follow, and not to look over our shoulders at others.

Tested saints in all ages have been prone to complain like Israel: “the way of the Lord is not equal” (Ezekiel 18:29). Some of God’s dealings seem to contradict our innate sense of fairness; and instead of faithfully discharging our responsibilities, we are tempted to look over ...read more
