The Angel's mention of "swaddling cloths" was understood by the shepherds as referring to their practice of wrapping up the Temple-bound passover lambs so that they wouldn't be blemished, & highlighted the birth of the Lamb of God.

The Christmas story is one of love, grace, mercy and blessing. For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, born of a virgin, laid in a manger, wrapped in swaddling clothes, declared by angels and a new star as being born. Jesus Christ is born! The Gospel has come at last!
