While reading this story we are all focused on what the woman does. It is Simon however on whom I would like to put the spotlight: the reality is that we are like the Pharisee, and not like the woman!

Simon, the Self-righteous Pharisee - sermon on Luke 7: 36-50 - The sinful woman. That is the name the translators of our translation gave to this paragraph in Luke’s gospel. Another title would have been more appropriate however. Maybe something like ‘Simon, the proud Pharisee.’ For the deepest ...read more

It is not the size of the dog in the fight! It is the size of the fight in the dog. Life is a story line --- you must punctuate properly. Is this a comma or a period. Ask Hezekiah for what appears the end might be a new opportunity.

  • The Day Samuel Met Jesus Series

Contributed by Jonathan Campbell on Feb 9, 2009
    based on 5 ratings

People mistakenly think that young Samuel was a believer when he was helping Eli in the temple. This is not the case. He was an unbeliever. This passage outlines the story of his conversion to Christ, not his call to service.

    1. THE UNCONVERTED CHILD "Now Samuel did not yet know the LORD, neither was the word of the LORD yet revealed unto him". I know about the Queen of England but I don’t know her. I know about the President of the United States but I don’t know him. Do you know the LORD or do you just know about ...read more

Often times we think our greatest need is one thing when God knows that it is another. Follow the journey of one man and discover your greatest need in his story!

Bringing Down The Roof - Mark 2:1-12 - July 22, 2012 (Baptism Service) It’s not uncommon today to hear people say something like this, “If God would just reveal Himself, if He would just do some miracle for me to see, then I would turn to Him and believe.” People are looking ...read more

The story of Bartimaeus provides an excellent text for a funeral with both a clear gospel message and encouragement for the family: Mr 10:50 And he, casting away his garment, rose, and came to Jesus.

We often align ourselves with the 'good' character, but stop and consider afresh which character you are like in this story. Are you self-sufficient? Fearful? Jealous? Grow to be more like David!

Contributed by Chuck Sligh on Dec 7, 2014
    based on 1 rating

There are many mysteries surrounding the Christmas story, but to me the greatest mystery may be why Jesus was laid in a manger. This sermon show that the manger show the REJECTION of Christ, His REDEMPTION and His REACHABLENESS.

The Mystery of the Manger Chuck Sligh December 7, 2014 TEXT: Luke 2:1-7 – “And it came to pass in those days, that there went out a decree from Caesar Augustus, that all the world should be taxed. 2 (And this taxing was first made when Cyrenius was governor of Syria.) 3 And all went to ...read more

The story of Jesus Christ’s crucifixion did not end on Friday. It did not end in death. Because it was early on Sunday morning – the very first day of the week – Jesus rose from the dead.

The story of Jesus Christ’s crucifixion did not end on Friday. It did not end in death. Because it was early on Sunday morning – the very first day of the week – Jesus rose from the dead. God has revealed in the Christmas story a powerful "sign" of the swaddling clothes and manger which has great spiritual significance, but it has been concealed by our cultural depictions of the Nativity Scene.

Luke reveals that God knows and controls much more than we may realize. A thoughtful look at the birth stories of John and Jesus reveal the amazing extent of God's sovereign will and foreknowledge.

Read Luke 1:5-2:7 Luke’s account of the coming of Jesus is where we learn of how close he and John the Baptist’s families were. We would not know their relationship or that John was of Aaronic descent were in not for Luke. Luke gives us historic markers like Herod, Ceasar Augustus ...read more

Why does Matthew add the story of the slaughter of the baby boys in Bethlehem. First becasue it is fact and second to trigger assocaiations between Jesus birth and Moses birth (see details in sermon)

I came across this excerpt from a sermon from the Early Church Father St. Quod-vult-deus (Sermo 2 de Symbolo: PL 40, 655) “A tiny child is born, who is a great king. Wise men are led to him from afar. They come to adore one who lies in a manger and yet reigns in heaven and on earth. When ...read more

One of the hardest things for Christians to do is to wait on God. The story of the resuscitation of Lazarus tells us many important things as we wait on God in what we think is a hopeless situation.

John 11:1-45 “When God Delays” INTRODUCTION One of the most difficult situations in the Christian life is when God remains silent to our prayers. Faye and I have good friends who have two teenagers. Their son has been diagnosed with ADD, and he has been treated for this ...read more
