God’s actions confirm His nature. God breaks in our world to give confirmation of His greatness. He does this in this passage and many times in the Old Testament – to confirm Himself as Lord.

Three offices in the Old Testament required anointing: prophet, priest, and king. A unique characteristic of the Christ, is that he fulfills all three offices at once. Only Jesus holds all three offices.

The Atonement for our sins provided by Jesus on the cross is a once and for all fulfillment of the Old Testament atonement which was temporary. Christ's atonement is pivotal in understanding salvation by grace and faith alone in Jesus Christ.
