Paul wrote Second Corinthians for several reasons: He wanted to encourage the church to forgive and restore the member who had caused all the trouble (2 Cor. 2:6-11). He wanted to reassert his apostolic authority among the Corinthians (2 Cor. 4:1-2; 10-1)

Paul is responding to a question raised in the minds of the Corinthians about Paul’s lack of commitment to the Church in Corinth or his supposed lack of sincerity.

The fact that Paul first made an unscheduled visit and then cancelled his second scheduled visit to Corinth gave his opponents another reason to criticize him. He had not carried out his promise.

Paul celebrates God's triumph , the triumph he won through Christ. The changed atmosphere in the church at Corinth is a victory for God because it is a victory of the Spirit of Christ. In the Christian life there are no victories that are not God's.

Traveling Christian evangelists in the first century, according to the custom of the day, carried letters of recommendation. With these a poor preacher would be given, at least, a place to stay, a meal, and an opportunity to speak to the congregation.

Paul had just finished mentioning the hardships and sufferings that he had faced in the service of God. It takes great faith to stay steady under such continual sufferings and still boldly preach the Christian gospel. He has such a steady faith.

This Epistle was designed to produce pain in the Corinthian believers—and Paul felt very apprehensive about its effect on them. It was painful to him to write it, and he was well aware that it must cause deep distress among them to be scolded in this manner.
