Nobody touched lepers in Jesus' day. Their disease was disgusting. People were afraid to catch it. Lepers were totally ostracized. When Jesus touched a leper, heads would turn. That just wasn't done. Who are the 'lepers' of our culture who need a loving touch from us?

Moved With Compassion

Three of the greatest words in scripture are "moved with compassion:. What moves you? What moves your needle? Jesus was "moved with compassion" for the lostness of man (Matthew 9), for the needs of man (Matthew 14), and now for an individual who needs a touch and a word.

Leprosy was believed to be God’s chastisement for sins that were committed by the person. That type of thinking removed compassion and sympathy for the leper. They were likely to be stoned, if they got too close.
