Why? God gave them to Israel before they entered the promised land as they were forming a new nation. He knew that the people needed laws to govern the people by. This is the shortest of all of the commandments and so simple that even a small child could understand it. However, in our society today this simple commandment is misunderstood by some.

Again I want to remind you that God has just delivered the children of Israel from Egyptian bondage. They could not deliver themselves, but God, by His marvelous grace delivered them.
