  • A Futile Effort Series

Contributed by Christopher Benfield on Feb 13, 2019
     | 6,438 views

God spoke to Jonah, calling him to go and cry against Nineveh. Foolishly, Jonah thought he could flee the presence of God. However, God intended for Nineveh to hear a warning, and He intended Jonah to deliver that warning. It is futile to try and flee God's presence!

A Futile Effort Jonah 1: 1-10 Having considered the introduction for Jonah, I want to remind us of the major theme of the book. Most tend to focus solely on Jonah’s miraculous deliverance from the belly of the great fish, but that is just one scene from this account in Scripture. In fact, that ...read more

Contributed by Dean Courtier on Sep 8, 2018

The concept and purpose of a divine call is not something we create, it is something God places within us. Have we responded to or rejected God’s specific call on our lives? Throughout history God has called people to Him and called people to serve Him. Let me tell you about some of them

We continue in our series Hope Found Here and this month we are considering Hope in the Call or Calling of God. The dictionary defines calling as: a strong inner impulse toward a particular course of action especially when accompanied by conviction of divine influence. The concept and purpose of a ...read more

This message looks at the storm that Jonah found himself in while running from God

Storms of Life 1 It seemed that whenever Dad and I swapped stories about the time we spent together at sea we always wound up talking about storms. We’d talk about how rough it got, how long it lasted, how sick Denn was. I began making trips with Dad on the tugs when I was fourteen, when I was ...read more

Today we’re going to look at the danger of sleeping spiritually. The scriptures indicate three reasons THIS IS NO TIME TO SLEEP: we're in a storm, we're in the presence of the enemy, and Jesus needs us now!

THIS IS NO TIME TO SLEEP! INTRODUCTION A. HUMOR 1. God has a funny sense of humor. He made US didn't he? I heard a story of how God made a young minister’s sermon come alive. 2. While a student at Bucknell University, he was invited to speak at a church in New Columbia, Pennsylvania. The ...read more

The amazing story of Jonah reminds us: 1) Don't run from God, 2) When life gets you down, look up, 3) Respond to God's second chance, and 4) Get God's heart for people. Like Jonah, we need to give up the "reluctant prophet" role and stay in God's will.

Jonah 3:1-10 Aligning My Will with God’s Prophets with a Purpose – Week 2 Do you ever feel like some people are beyond hope, that they are incapable of change? Or maybe you’ve felt like God wanted you to do something, but you resisted that urge? If so, you can identify with the prophet Jonah. ...read more

  • Buying Your Own Ticket To Hell

Contributed by John Gaston on Jan 15, 2020
    based on 1 rating

Nobody really wants to go to Hell. Its very name conveys the ideas of “dread” and “punishment.” As strange as it sounds, one man in Scripture did buy his own ticket to Hell. Possibly some of you are in the process of buying your own ticket there.

BUYING YOUR OWN TICKET TO HELL Jonah 1:3; 2:1-2 INTRODUCTION A. HUMOR 1. A young boy from down south attended Sunday school for the first time with his grandparents who lived up north. He was so excited he couldn’t wait to tell grandma about the lesson. 2. "My teacher taught us all ...read more

Jonah Chapter 1 – Running from God February 2, 2020 Jonah 1:2-6 NIV “Go to the great city of Nineveh and preach against it, because its wickedness has come up before me.”3 But Jonah ran away from the LORD and headed for Tarshish. • A Disturbing Call From A Merciful God Series

Contributed by Allan Quak on Feb 17, 2020
     | 4,620 views

The call by God for Jonah to go to Nineveh to preach is a call which confronts Jonah with a disturbing dynamic of God’s unanticipated mercy. Jonah finds this call too disturbing so he goes in the opposite direction to run away from the call of God.

Message Jonah 1:1-3 A Disturbing Call From A Merciful God I don’t have definitive proof but it would be my educated opinion that the story of Jonah … specifically the part where Jonah is swallowed by a large fish or whale … is one of the most well-known stories in the Bible. Ask anybody who Jonah ...read more

  • Our Identity Before A Merciful God Series

Contributed by Allan Quak on Feb 21, 2020
     | 3,525 views

Jonah professes to be a Hebrew who worships the Lord. However, because he cannot accept the unanticipated mercy of God Jonah behaves like cargo. We are cargo when we don't speak to God.

Message Jonah 1:4-17 Our Identity Before A Merciful God Last week we ended with Jonah in the town of Joppa paying the fare to sail for Tarshish. Jonah did this because he found the mercy which God was extending to the town of Nineveh too disturbing. A succinct visual summary of the actions of ...read more

  • Anywhere But Nineveh

Contributed by John Gaston on Apr 29, 2018
    based on 1 rating

God has a Nineveh for every one of us -- a place we don't want to go; a command we don't want to obey. Going to Nineveh is unpopular, it will cost us, it doesn't make sense and it's hard. But God's purpose in dealing with us is to save many souls.

ANYWHERE BUT NINEVEH Jon. 1:1-17 INTRODUCTION A. HUMOR 1. A city slicker pulled up to a farmhouse. He saw a farmer's wife on the front porch. 2. He pointed down the road; "Can I get to Quincy that way?" "Yep." "How far is it?" "25,000 miles!" 3. "What?" How far is it the other way?" "3 ...read more

Contributed by Douglas Phillips on Jun 23, 2019
     | 8,374 views

THERE ARE TIMES WHEN WE THINK WE KNOW BETTER THAN GOD WHAT HIS PLAN SHOULD BE. IF A LOVED ONE IS SICK AND IN PAIN, WE WANT TO TREAT THE PAIN RIGHT AWAY, WHEN THE PAIN COULD BE NECESSARY TO PROPERLY DIAGNOSE THE PROBLEM

WHEN GOD’S WAYS DON’T MAKE SENSE, THEN WHAT? JONAH 1:1-16 WE’VE JUST STARTED A SERIES DEALING WITH THINGS IN LIFE THAT DO NOT GO AS WE WOULD WANT THEM TO. SOMETIMES IT SEEMS AS IF THERE IS TRIAL AFTER TRIAL PUT ON OUR PLATE AND WE WANT TO ASK GOD WHY THIS IS HAPPENING AND WHEN IT WILL STOP. ...read more
