The phrase "salt of the earth" has become a commonly used expression in our society. The dictionary defines it as used in reference to "a very good and honest person or group," but that doesn't begin to do justice to what Jesus had in mind in this teaching.

The sinful cities of Sodom and Gomorrah were destroyed for their sinfulness. Lot's wife was turned into a pillar of salt for looking back at the cities. Do we deserve the same fate for looking back to our sinful lives?

We are the salt of the earth and the light of the world. We are not called to withdraw from public life into our safe and cozy Christian circles. We are called to make a difference in a world full of darkness, fear, violence, and foolishness.
