As I read through this passage, it appears that Elijah is testing Elisha. Look at verse 2. He said to Elisha, “...Tarry here, I pray thee; for the Lord hath sent me to Beth-el...”

Elijah was a mighty man of God. He stood like a stone wall against idolatry, and he was not afraid to speak truth to power or tell the people what they needed to hear.
