Quenching the Wrath of God

I. Wrath – What is it?

A. Websters = Wrath - intense anger (usually on an epic scale)

1. Think of times where you may have been wrathful.

2. Was that a positive experience? For you? For the other person?

B. Strong’s Concordance = Wrath

1. {3709 orge – or – gay }violent passion; justifiable [abhorrence]- to regard with loathing

a. Example – Rom 1:18 Wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness

2. {2372 thuo – thoo o } passion (as if breathing hard) – fierceness – picture rabid animal

a. Example – Luke 4:28 When they heard these things they were filled with wrath

II. God is wrathful- 2Chron. 29:10 Now it is in my heart to make a covenant with the Lord God of Israel, that His fierce wrath may turn away from us.

A. The necessity of God’s wrath- Rom 9:22,23 “What if God, wanting to show His wrath and to make His power known, endured with much longsuffering the vessels of wrath prepared for destruction, & that He might make known the riches of His glory on the vessels of mercy, which He had prepared beforehand for glory

1. In order for God to demonstrate His mercy He had to be wrathful

a. God makes His wrath known so we know where the border line is.

B. The means of God’s wrath- Judgement – Rom. 13:4 “For he is God’s minister to you for good. But if you do evil, be afraid; for he does not bear the sword in vain; for he is God’s minister, an avenger to execute wrath on him who practices evil.”

1. The Sword- God’s Word; Eph. 4:17, Acts 2:37, Heb. 4:12

a. purpose is to cut and sanctify that which was evil in the sight of the Lord to Holiness

C. The results of God’s wrath- Mercy – Hab. 3:2 “O Lord, I have heard your speech and was afraid; O Lord, revive Your work in the midst of the years! In the midst of the years make it known; In wrath remember mercy.”

1. Note, Even those that are under the tokens of God’s wrath must not despair of his mercy; and mercy, is that which we must flee to for refuge, and rely upon as our only plea. He does not say, Remember our merit, but, Lord, remember thy own mercy.

2. Encountering God’s Mercy makes you reflect on His goodness and draws you to Himself through repentance. 2Cor. 7:10 “For godly sorrow produces repentance leading to salvation, not to be regretted; but the sorrow of the world produces death.”

a. Greek word here for salvation is soteria ( so tay ree ah) rescue to safety, delivered.

III. Christ’s Sacrifice is the fulfillment of God’s wrath – Rom 5:9 “Much more then, having now been justified by His blood, we shall be saved from God’s wrath through Him (Jesus).”

A. God necessitates a sacrifice for the forgiveness of sin and the quenching of His wrath

Heb. 9:22 “And according to the law almost all things are purified with blood, and without shedding of blood there is no remission of sin.”

1. The sacrifice was killed in such a way as to shed blood and then that was sprinkled on people to purify them before God. Ex. 24:8 And Moses took the blood, sprinkled it on the people, and said, "This is the blood of the covenant which the Lord has made with you according to all these words."

a. Neither they nor us can enter into covenanted relationship with God without the blood of something of absolute Purity and Holiness, a perfect sacrifice.

B. God necessitates the Sacrifice to be without blemish. Lev. 1:3 ’If his offering is a burnt sacrifice of the herd, let him offer a male without blemish; he shall offer it of his own free will at the door of the tabernacle of meeting before the Lord.”

1.Heb. 4:15 For we do not have a High Priest who cannot sympathize with our weaknesses, but was in all points tempted as we are, yet without sin.

a. The burnt offering was the only out of the 5 that the WHOLE offering was consumed. Jesus freely entered the Cross with full intention of being this burnt offering for us. Because of His perfection, through Him have access to the Throne of Grace

Heb. 4:16 Let us therefore come boldly to the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy and find grace to help in time of need.

C. God made the sacrifice accessible to mankind. 2Cor 5:21 For He made Him who knew no sin to be sin for us, that we might become the righteousness of God in Him.
