Summary: Jesus declares He is the Way, the Truth and the Life.
Thomas said to him, “Lord, we don’t know where you are going, so how can we know the way?” Jesus answered, “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except though me. If you really knew me, you would know my Father as well. From now on, you do know him and have seen him.” John 14:5-7
*Jesus had just shared with His disciples that He was going on before them to prepare a place for them in Heaven, and that they knew the way to get there when it was time.
*He was encouraging them to not lose heart or give up hope. Jesus wanted them to understand that as good as they thought they had it, it was only going to get better. THEY NEEDED TO TRUST HIM!!
1. I Am the Way.
A way of course or conduct; a way of thinking, feeling, or deciding.
This is the foundation of Christian doctrine. Jesus is the only way to eternal life.
Thomas, as many, asked how they would know the way to where Jesus was going.
Jesus’ instruction to them was that they would know the way to the Father because He had been showing them the Father for over 3 years by the things He said and the things He had been doing.
2. I Am the Truth.
Jesus is the full embodiment of the truth of the Kingdom of God.
It is only in knowing Him that freedom can be found and enjoyed in our lives.
3. I Am the Life.
Jesus is reminding them of what they heard Him say to Martha concerning Lazarus about being the embodiment of eternal life NOW.
