The calling of John the Baptist is direct: Repent (turn) and receive. This appears to be tough challenge today … but it’s no different than it was in AD 29!!!

None of us is immune to being tempted … but we all can overcome by following the same model that Jesus provided for us. When you resist him, you are choosing the things of God; you are choosing to turn away from the quick pleasure fix (of sin) and seeking His way to guide your life.

It’s critical that we see ourselves and the calling of the disciples was NO different than ours. If we will not share what we know, are we any different than the religious pharisees?

Jesus often taught in parables and referred to them as such, but in this passage there is no mention of it being a parable ... this is the story of an actual event, and He makes it very clear that each of us has a choice on where we will spend eternity, because our life choices do matter.

Jesus is moving towards His ultimate purpose and He arrives in the epicenter of “God’s people - Jerusalem”. It’s critical to realize this is for God’s glory - for Him to do this publicly - to show how committed God is to us.

This chapter gives us comprehensive insight into the return of Jesus, however, it can be one of the most misunderstood passages. We must be careful to hear and listen to what the Spirit is saying!

The communion, the covenant, the denial, the sifting, the charge, all of these things pointed to Jesus fulfilling His ultimate purpose (to die for us), and the focus of the disciples was still on earthly things. Will we see the lesson Jesus was teaching and apply it to our lives?
