Sometimes His ways are hard to understand at the time, I can offer a personal example: Teenage children can be quite a trial, even a pain! 25 years ago my son was! He was keen on old vehicles that he intended to renovate. Against my better judgement, so I thought at the time, he acquired an old

A young man left his employer, a lumber merchant, and began business in opposition to him. For a while he prospered greatly and got many orders that would have gone to the firm he had left. But just when his business seemed to be most flourishing, and he had more orders than he could supply, a

AN INADEQUATE CONSTITUTION
For most of our history we have remained a religious people. From the very first moment that Americans officially declared themselves before the world to be one people, they appealed to the “Creator” and the “Laws of Nature and of Nature’s God.” From the brave

SHOUTING THE GOOD NEWS?
It’s amazing how many people try to share the good news with a sense of rage and hatred.
Example: ranting and raving about a particular social ill, polarizing people, and focusing more on judgment and God’s wrath than on the hope that Christ offers.
People rant about

I read a story this week about a woman who was the only English teacher in a small rural school. She described what she called “the mixed pleasure of teaching my own three sons.” They begged her not to call on them in class, use them as examples, or tell any family stories— rules to which their mom

Adrian Dieleman tells the story of one man’s transformation: “Oscar Cervantes is a dramatic example of the Spirit’s power to transform lives. As a child, Oscar began to get into trouble. Then as he got older, he was jailed 17 times for brutal crimes. Prison psychiatrists said he was beyond

People with Conviction
In the events of the bridge collaple here in Minneapolis this past week, you have probably heard of countless examples of people acting with conviction.
• Ed Nelson M.P.D. - when you encounter a situation like that, you just do it.
• Shannon Hanson E.M.T. - "It’s just part of

The number 13, for example:
The Turks so disliked that number that they practically removed it from their vocabulary (Brewer, 1894).
Many cities do not have a 13th Street or a 13th Avenue.
Many buildings don’t have a 13th floor.
And according to information I had a number of years ago, some

Last week’s I talked about the need for the church to give up some of their rights for the sake of the weaker ones in Christ. Today no one wants to be held responsible for their actions.
I looked up the word “Responsible” and discovered this: The state of being responsible, accountable, or

I have a water filter attached to my kitchen sink at home. The water normally smells bad, tastes bad, because it has stuff in it. When the water comes into the filter, the filter holds on to all the bad stuff. It doesn’t allow the bad stuff to go on through.
I think our brains have a “filter” too.

We Need Help to Get Out
Follow the example of the Chilean miners. Trapped beneath two thousand feet of solid rock, the thirty-three men were desperate. The collapse of a main tunnel had sealed their exit and thrust them into survival mode. They ate two spoonfuls of tuna, a sip of milk, and a

One definition of the word irony is, “a state of affairs or an event that seems deliberately contrary to what one expects and is often amusing as a result.”
