When I was a kid, we rode our bikes down the sidewalks and in the streets. We played baseball and football in the street. Summers were especially great because we could play ball until you couldn’t see. We rode in cars with no seat belts or car seats. Riding in the back of a pick up on a warm day was a special treat. We drank water from a garden hose. We fell out of trees, got cut, broke bones and teeth. We ate mud pies made from dirt. We played with BB guns and made up games with sticks. We had freedom, failure, success and responsibility. It was an incredible time to grow up. And we did it all without helmets.
Even though we survived riding our bikes without a helmet, no one today would consider doing that. Studies have shown that bicycle helmets save over 50,000 lives per year. We just didn’t know that 50 years ago. Now when we...
