[245]. A MESSAGE FROM A POEM – IN THE HIGHEST SPLENDOUR REIGNS

Christ has ascended and reigns in heaven in the highest splendour. At His Second Coming He comes to reign as King of the whole earth in Jerusalem. Grace has elevated us who are just sinners saved by grace. {{2 Timothy 2:12 “If we endure, WE SHALL ALSO REIGN WITH HIM. If we deny Him, He also will deny us.”}}

My desire here was to write a poem whose focus is on the Lord Jesus Christ, unlike some of the contemporary church songs that glorify self and act as the catalyst in “performance shows”. Those songs are egocentric.

What is SPLENDOUR? I always use British spellings (nearly always) but I have left the American spellings in here.

Definition for splendour from Cambridge – “great beauty that attracts admiration and attention, or the beautiful features or qualities of an item/something.”

From Your Dictionary – “Splendor definition: Great light or luster; brilliance. Origin of Splendor is from Anglo-Norman splendur, splendour, or directly from its source - Latin splendor, from the verb splendere ("to shine").

Jesus Christ reigns in highest splendour, and He shines in glory. Splendour is innate in the Godhead, but in this poem I look at some of His work that adds to that splendour. Jesus died for sinful men and women. The poem ends with the call for praise to be given to the Lord.

It is a simple poem, but that does not mean it reduces the glory of the Lord Jesus. The word splendour/splendor is used only once in the New Testament in the NASB – {{Luke 16:19 “Now there was a certain rich man and he habitually dressed in purple and fine linen, gaily living in splendour every day,”}} and that is such a great contrast to the heavenly splendor the Lord has.

The word is used fairly often in the Old Testament especially in the Psalms. Here is just one reference - {{Psalm 96:6 “Splendour and majesty are before Him. Strength and beauty are in His sanctuary.”}}

Just a closing thought – {{Psalm 145:5 “On the glorious splendour of Your majesty and on Your wonderful works, I will meditate”}}. I hope the poem helps a tiny bit in doing that.

IN THE HIGHEST SPLENDOUR REIGNS

In the highest splendour reigns

He who is the King of Kings;

Lord of Lords, creation deigns;

Glory to this One it brings.

================

Uncreated is His throne,

Where sits the Son exalted.

Praise belongs to Him alone,

Whose love has never faltered.

================

Once to earth he came to die:

Righteous One for sinners vile;

Jesus laid His splendour by;

Men, He came to reconcile.

================

Risen now, Lord of the Church;

Saviour of each contrite one.

Shepherd of the sheep will search,

‘Till the darkened night is done.

================

See compassion He displayed!

Helpless man must to Him turn;

Smitten ones by sin waylaid.

For their life His heart does yearn.

================

Praise and glory to Him give,

He, the everlasting Son.

Through His death all men may live.

Their salvation He has won.

================
