[077]. A MESSAGE FROM A POEM – EYES AND EARS - BLIND AND DEAF
Stubbornness is so bound up in most people that it will not release them, particularly when the things of God are presented. Stubbornness refuses to see reason and to see the light, and to hear and obey.
The prophets were frustrated time and time again with Israel and its people who would not listen and take heed of the warnings of God’s judgement. They were like blocks of stone, earless blocks. Their eyes were like those that see in a totally blackened inner cave. They see nothing.
Many times the prophets spoke of the dullness of hearing God’s word and eyes that were unable to see the light streaming from God. This is just one example – {{Isaiah 42:20 “YOU HAVE SEEN MANY THINGS BUT YOU DO NOT OBSERVE THEM. YOUR EARS ARE OPEN, BUT NONE HEARS.”}}
Because God’s word was rejected and stubbornly refused, then it is as if God has blinded the eyes and deafened the ears of the people. That is what this verse means – {{Isaiah 6:10 “Render the hearts of this people insensitive for THEIR EARS are dull and THEIR EYES dim, lest they see with their eyes, hear with their ears, understand with their hearts, and return and be healed.”}}
Isaiah issued the challenge – {{Isaiah 43:8 “Bring out the people who are blind even though they have eyes, and the deaf even though they have ears.”}} Sadly in his time the whole nation would have assembled for the challenge applied to everyone. The wonderful news is, that in the restoration of Israel Isaiah often speaks of, there will be a great change and this happens – {{Isaiah 35:5 “Then the eyes of the blind will be opened and the ears of the deaf will be unstopped.”}}
THE POEM IS IN 4 SECTIONS EACH WITH A DIFFERENT EMPHASIS.
SECTION 1: A description of what is existing in people’s lives now.
SECTION 2: The questions are asked.
SECTION 3: This begins with free will and men use it to refuse God. This stanza further examines the refusal to see and to listen.
STANZA 4: The end is a call to come to God
==========================================================
This poem is in four sections, each with its own metre and rhyme scheme
EYES AND EARS - BLIND AND DEAF
Those who hear the good word, but refuse to listen to it,
Are like earless pieces of stone.
Those who see the light, and close their eyes in blindness unlit,
Are like the ones who blackness own.
Those who read the gospel message, and delete what’s been read,
Are to special ignorance, prone.
Those who speak not wisdom, but prattle foolishness instead,
Are all like a babbling brook’s clone.
==================================
Why is the heart of man so hard?
Why choose as not to understand?
Why is wisdom so very marred?
Why is common sense being banned?
==================================
To all His creation, God has granted free will;
The decision of choice to exercise.
Man’s expected, his obligations to fulfil,
To understand, reason and harmonise.
For all creation is shouting with mighty voice,
To break man’s resistant barriers down.
Creation draws the wise and honest to rejoice,
But rejection and fools act out the clown.
Eyes to see and ears to hear, but they’re not employed:
Steadfastly, each one refuses to learn.
The beauty and grace of wisdom is not enjoyed;
The eyes, ears, voice, the mind will not discern.
The god of this world has blinded the eyes of those
Who refuse to believe to salvation.
They will stumble through life with minds and hearts they froze,
For rejection will lead to damnation.
==================================
Come, follow God and choose His light.
Come to Jesus for renewed sight.
Come to God’s presence from your night.
Let God, in your heart, His love write;
Spiritual things become bright.
Darkness, replaced by linen white.
Come, open your ears now shut tight
So that God’s voice you hear aright.
