We're Don't Always Know Who We're Talking To
Contributed by Glynda Lomax on Mar 2, 2025 (message contributor)
Proverbs 10:19 - 19 In the multitude of words there wanteth not sin: but he that refraineth his lips is wise.
Sometimes we are so busy talking that we aren’t even talking to who we think we are talking to. I have to tell yall a story about my sweet little Southern Mama who is now in heaven with Jesus.
Many years ago when my little mama was still living on the earth, I lived in Elk City in Western Oklahoma and each evening after my work in the courthouse, I would try to go spend some time with her. She was 80 years or so of age then.
So one evening I went into her apartment and sat down, and as always, asked her how her day was.
She proceeded to tell me she had gotten into it with a really hateful telephone operator. Years ago, you actually could talk to a real person on the phone who would help you place long distance phone calls. So I asked her what had happened. Mom was a very outspoken person and if you got out of line, she would help you get back IN line. No matter who you were.
She said she was trying to call I don’t remember now who it was, but it was someone long distance, maybe one of her sisters in Texas. And this hateful operator kept breaking in as she was trying to dial.
Finally, Mom said, she just unleashed on her and told her off and I think told her she needed Jesus, too.
I said, Well what did she say to you that was so hateful? Trying to understand the whole story.
And she said, she kept saying, If you would like to make a call, please hang up and try again. If you would like to make a call, please hang up and try again. If you would like to make a call, please hang up and try again.
She said I told her I was TRYING to make that call before she so rudely butted in to my call and that she needed to get off the line because I wanted my call to be in PRIVATE!!!
Shaking my head in sympathy, I said, you know, I think I’ve gotten that same rude operator before, Mom. She’s terrible, isn’t she? LOLOLOLOL
Just goes to show you, we aren’t always talking to who we think we are talking to.
