Title: Three kinds of Tongues & the Importance of Tongues
Theme: To show the three kinds of tongues in the Bible and show the importance of each.
Text: 1 Cor 14:1-2
But covet earnestly the best gifts: (1 Corinthians 12:31 AV)
Spiritual Gifts: 1 Cor 12:8-10,28
For to one is given by the Spirit the (1) word of wisdom; to another the (2) word of knowledge by the same Spirit; To another (3) faith by the same Spirit; to another the (4) gifts of healing by the same Spirit; To another the (5) working of miracles; to another (6) prophecy; to another (7) discerning of spirits; to another (8) divers kinds of tongues; to another the (9) interpretation of tongues: (1 Corinthians 12:8-10)
Follow after charity, and desire spiritual gifts, but rather that ye may prophesy.(especially desire the gift of prophecy) 2 For he that speaketh in an unknown tongue speaketh not unto men, but unto God: for no man understandeth him; howbeit in the spirit he speaketh mysteries. 3 But he that prophesieth speaketh unto men to edification (strengthening), and exhortation (encouragement), and comfort. 4 He that speaketh in an unknown tongue edifieth himself; but he that prophesieth edifieth the church. 5 I would that ye all spake with tongues, but rather that ye prophesied: for greater is he that prophesieth than he that speaketh with tongues, except he interpret, that the church may receive edifying. (1 Corinthians 14:1-5 AV)
Three types of tongues:
1) Spiritual (from God) 2) Psychological (from flesh) repetition of what is heard from others 3) Demonic (from Satan)
I. Initial Evidence 5 of 6 times mentioned in Acts
1) Day of Pentecost Acts 2:1-4 Acts 2:4
Acts 2:4 And they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance. 2) Samaritan Acts 8:14-19 How did Simeon know that they were filled with the Spirit?
Acts 8:18-19 And when Simon saw that through laying on of the apostles' hands the Holy Ghost was given, he offered them money, Saying, Give me also this power, that on whomsoever I lay hands, he may receive the Holy Ghost
3) Paul's filling Acts 9:17-19 Paul wrote in 1 Cor 14:5, 18
1 Cor 14:5 I would that ye all spake with tongues, but rather that ye prophesied: for greater is he that prophesieth than he that speaketh with tongues, except he interpret, that the church may receive edifying.
1 Cor 14:18 I thank my God, I speak with tongues more than ye all:
4) Caesarea Acts 10:44-46 Acts 10:46
Acts 10:46 For they heard them speak with tongues, and magnify God. Then answered Peter, 5) Ephesus Acts 19:1-6 Acts 19: 6
Acts 19:6 And when Paul had laid his hands upon them, the Holy Ghost came on them; and they spake with tongues, and prophesied.
Other fruit that comes from the Spirit Baptism
a) personal boldness and power to accomplish mighty works in the name of Christ (Acts
1:8; 2:14-41; 4:31; 6:8 ROM 15:18-19; 1 Cor 2:4) b) prophetic utterances and praise (Acts 2:4,17; 10:46; 1 Cor 14:2 c) sensitivity to sin and desire for holiness (John 16:8; Acts 1:8) d) life which glorifies Christ (John 16:13-14; Acts 4:33)
e) new visions (Acts 2:17)
f) manifestation of the various gifts of the Spirit (1 Cor 12:4-11)
g) greater desire to intercede and pray (Acts 2:41-42; 3:1; 4:23-31; 6:4; 10:9; ROM 8:26)
h) a deeper love and understanding of God's Word (John 16:13; Acts 2:42)
i) an increasing awareness of God as one's Father (Acts 1:4; ROM 8:15; Gal 4:6)
II. Devotional Tongues
a) praying in tongues a deeper devotion with the Lord a heavenly language
Eph 6:18a Praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit,
Jude 1:20b praying in the Holy Ghost,
1 Cor 14:15 What is it then? I will pray with the spirit, and I will pray with the understanding also: I will sing with the spirit, and I will sing with the understanding also.
Most important making sure that our prayer comes in perfect harmony with that of the Spirits.
b) Praising in Tongues
the tongues on the Day of Pentecost proclaims "the wonderful works of God"
Ac 2:11 Cretes and Arabians, we do hear them speak in our tongues the wonderful works of God.
1 Cor 14:14-15 For if I pray in an unknown tongue, my spirit prayeth, but my understanding is unfruitful. What is it then? I will pray with the spirit, and I will pray with the understanding also: I will sing with the spirit, and I will sing with the understanding also.
c) Singing in Tongues Speaking to yourselves in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody in your heart to the Lord; (Ephesians 5:19 AV)
