"The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit; a broken and contrite heart, O God, you will not despise..." These were the words uttered by King David as was repenting of the rape of Bathsheba, getting her pregnant, and killing her husband. It wasn't just the blood of an animal that David needed in order to be forgiven and cleansed from his sin. He also needed to be broken over it so that the Lord would have mercy upon him. We, too, need to be broken over our sins with a sorrowful and repentant heart. This is the evidence of an individual who has seen the light of Christ with the darkness of their own soul. Give your congregation an opportunity this Lord's Day to meditate upon their sin and cling to Jesus Christ for forgiveness.
