Summary: A message of hope when we feel all alone.

Stand with me and lift your Bible and repeat after me.

This is my Bible.

I am what it says I am.

I can do what it says I can do.

I am going to learn how to be what it says I can be.

Today I will learn more of the living God.

The indestructible, never ending, living word of God.

I will never be the same.

I will never be the same.

In Jesus name.

Turn with me in your Bible to Psalm 142 and say, "Amen" when you are there.

“WHEN THE CAVE BECOMES THE PLACE OF BREAKTHROUGH. "Psalm 142*

Every follower of Christ will eventually walk through a cave season — a season where the light seems dim, the way seems unsure, and the heart feels overwhelmed.

Psalm 142 is not written from the palace…

Not written from victory…

Not written in peace…

It is written from a cave — a literal place of darkness, fear, uncertainty, and isolation.

Yet this is also where David experienced God in ways that shaped his destiny.

Your cave may look different:

* A health crisis

* A financial burden

* A broken relationship

* A moment of loneliness

* A season of discouragement

* A time of waiting

* A struggle no one else knows about

But here’s the good news:

**God does some of His greatest work in caves.**

DAVID’S JOURNEY TO THE CAVE OF ADULLAM

Before we read Psalm 142, remember where David is:

He had served faithfully in Saul’s court

He had won battles for Israel

He had done nothing wrong — but Saul’s jealousy drove him out

He fled for his life

He ended up alone in a cave, exhausted, confused, and hunted

It is here — in the shadows — that David prays Psalm 142.

This is not the prayer of a king.

This is the prayer of a man with nowhere to go but God.

PSALM 142 verses 1-7

“I cry aloud to the Lord; I lift up my voice to the Lord for mercy.”

“When my spirit grows faint within me, it is You who know my way.”

“No one cares for my life.”

“You are my refuge, my portion in the land of the living.”

“Set me free from my prison, that I may praise Your name.”

1. DAVID’S HONEST CRY (v.1–2)

“I cry aloud… I pour out my complaint before Him.”

David doesn’t pray soft prayers.

He prays real prayers.

He doesn’t hide his emotions from God.

He pours them out.

Many believers feel guilty for being honest with God.

But the cave teaches us this truth:

God can handle your truth.

He can handle your pain.

Your frustration.

Your confusion.

Your tears.

Your questions.

God is not looking for polished prayers — He’s looking for **honest hearts.

Cave seasons strip away fake religion and reveal real relationship.

2. DAVID FELT FORGOTTEN, BUT GOD WAS NEAR (v.4)

“Look and see, there is no one at my right hand… no one cares for my life.”

This is loneliness at its peak.

David says:

“No one sees me.

No one cares.

No one stands with me.”

But when everyone else walked out, God walked in.

Your cave does not prove God abandoned you.

It proves God is preparing you.

3. GOD KNOWS THE PATH YOU CANNOT SEE (v.3)

“When my spirit grows faint within me, it is You who know my way.”

David doesn’t know what to do next.

But God does.

The path may be confusing to you, but it is clear to God.

He sees…

What you don’t see

What’s around the corner

What is being prepared

What doors will open

What miracles are forming

What blessings are coming

You may be in the dark, but God is not.

4. DAVID DECLARES HIS FAITH (v.5)

“You are my refuge and my portion.

David says:

“Even here — in the cave — You are enough.”

Not the crown.

Not the palace.

Not the applause.

Not the approval of others.

God alone is my portion.

The cave teaches us that the presence of God is not dependent on our surroundings.

When God is all you have, you discover He is all you need.

5. DAVID EXPECTS DELIVERANCE (v.7)

“Set me free… then the righteous will gather around me.”

David sees the future from inside the cave.

He sees a day when…

God rescues him

God leads him out

God restores him

God surrounds him with people who believe in him again

Your cave is temporary.

Your breakthrough is scheduled.

God is setting the stage for your victory while you worship in the cave.

A young missionary couple moved to a remote island to translate Scripture and plant a church. What they expected to take months took years.

They battled:

Illness

Loneliness
