Transformed by Truth: The Value of the Sparrow
Luke 12:6-7 (NLT) - "What is the price of five sparrows—two copper coins? Yet God does not forget a single one of them. And the very hairs on your head are all numbered. So don’t be afraid; you are more valuable to God than a whole flock of sparrows."
Introduction
Today, we are going to explore the profound truth found in Luke 12:6-7. These verses remind us of our immense value to God and His meticulous care for us. Let's examine three transformative truths that can reshape our understanding of God’s love and our identity in Him.
Point 1: God's Mindfulness of the Smallest Details
Luke 12:6 (NLT): "What is the price of five sparrows—two copper coins? Yet God does not forget a single one of them."
Matthew 10:29-31 (NLT): "What is the price of two sparrows—one copper coin? But not a single sparrow can fall to the ground without your Father knowing it. And the very hairs on your head are all numbered. So don’t be afraid; you are more valuable to God than a whole flock of sparrows."
In ancient Israel, sparrows were among the cheapest birds sold in the market, highlighting their insignificance in the eyes of people. Yet, Jesus emphasizes that God’s attention to detail includes even the smallest of His creations.
The Greek word for “forget” is "?p??a?????µa?" (epilanthanomai), which means to neglect or overlook. God’s mindfulness extends to every creature, no matter how insignificant it may seem to us.
If God remembers even the sparrows, how much more does He care for us? We must live with the assurance that every detail of our lives is known and valued by our Creator. Our worries and anxieties can be laid at His feet, knowing He cares for us deeply.
As Max Lucado writes, “If God had a refrigerator, your picture would be on it. If He had a wallet, your photo would be in it. He sends you flowers every spring and a sunrise every morning. Face it, friend. He is crazy about you!” (Lucado, "A Gentle Thunder").
Point 2: The Intimate Knowledge of God
Luke 12:7a (NLT): "And the very hairs on your head are all numbered."
Psalm 139:1-4 (NLT): "O Lord, you have examined my heart and know everything about me. You know when I sit down or stand up. You know my thoughts even when I’m far away. You see me when I travel and when I rest at home. You know everything I do. You know what I am going to say even before I say it, Lord."
God’s knowledge of us is not just broad but also intensely personal. The verb "numbered" in Greek is "????µ??" (arithmeo), which signifies a precise, careful accounting.
Understanding God’s intimate knowledge of us should inspire us to trust Him more deeply. He knows our thoughts, fears, and dreams. This should encourage us to approach Him with confidence and transparency, knowing that nothing about us is hidden from Him.
As Rick Warren states, “God is more interested in your character than your comfort. He is more interested in making your life holy than He is in making your life happy.” (Warren, "The Purpose Driven Life").
Point 3: Our Incomparable Value to God
Luke 12:7b (NLT): "So don’t be afraid; you are more valuable to God than a whole flock of sparrows."
Psalm 8:4-5 (NLT): "What are mere mortals that you should think about them, human beings that you should care for them? Yet you made them only a little lower than God and crowned them with glory and honor."
Jesus reassures His disciples of their worth. The word "valuable" in Greek is "d?af???" (diaphero), meaning to be of more value or to surpass. This signifies not just value, but surpassing worth.
Recognizing our value to God changes how we see ourselves and others. It drives us to live purposefully and love others as God loves us. Our identity and worth are found in Him, not in our achievements or failures.
C.S. Lewis poignantly reminds us, “You are never too old to set another goal or to dream a new dream.” Our value in God’s eyes means we always have purpose and potential in Him (Lewis, "Mere Christianity").
Conclusion and Call to Action
Today, let us remember that we are intricately known, deeply valued, and unconditionally loved by God. Let these truths transform our hearts and minds. As we go about our lives, may we trust in His care, rest in His intimate knowledge, and live out our true value.
Application:
This week, take time to meditate on these truths. Reflect on how God’s mindfulness of the small details, His intimate knowledge of you, and your incomparable value to Him can reshape your daily walk. Let us pray:
