Summary: Is Santa or Jesus more important at Christmas?

Toy service 2009

I came across this story recently on the internet

It is about a boy named Paul, who lived in America.

One day Paul was talking to his friends at school, and he said

"I know what Christmas is about. It is about the birth of Jesus.”

"That’s rubbish," said one of his friends. "Everybody knows that."

"No," said Paul. "That’s what Christmas is really about. It’s about Jesus coming."

"No it’s not," said another friend. "It’s about Santa Claus coming. After all it’s Santa who brings us presents not Jesus" . And they all laughed at him

That night when Paul and his father were getting ready to say their prayers, Paul asked,

"Is Christmas about Santa Claus coming or about Jesus coming?"

"Why do you ask?" his father replied.

"Well, my school teacher said it was about Jesus, but my friends at school said it’s about Santa Claus," said Paul.

"Do you remember when your brother was born?" his father said.

"Yes," said Paul.

"Do you remember Grandma and Grandpa coming to see the new baby?"

"Yes."

"Do you remember that they brought you a present when they came?"

"Yes," said Paul. "It was a remote control car."

"So, what was that day about?

Was it about your baby brother or about your new toy?

Which is more important, your brother or the toy?"

Paul had to think about that.

"Well, which one changed your life more, your brother or the toy?"

"My brother," said Paul.

"Exactly. So, if we say Christmas is about Jesus coming, we’re talking about the baby Jesus being born.

If we say Christmas is about Santa Claus coming, we’re talking about getting toys.

Which do you think is more important?"

"Jesus coming is more important," said Paul.

And they said a prayer like this: “Dear God, we thank you for toys at Christmas, but most of all we thank you for the baby Jesus. Amen.”

Conclusion:

You see HOW we view Christmas will colour the way we live our lives.

If it is all about getting presents, we will grow up demanding things all our lives.

If we see the presents we get as celebrating the birth of Jesus, we will enjoy our presents but we will see something more significant behind them

We will see Christmas as a time when we can celebrate the birth of Jesus.

And he can change your life more than any toys can

At Christams we have the chance to receive the very special present God gave to this world 2000 years ago – the gift of His son

And when we receive Jesus it will change the way we live

St John puts it like this

12To all who received Jesus, to those who believed in his name, God gave the right to become children of God— 13children born not of natural descent, nor of human decision or a husband’s will, but born of God. (Jn 1:12-13).

Now to be a child of God is really a present worth having
