The Living Water Series

We are learning a lot about the importance of water all around the world at this year’s Folk Fair! What does God say about water?

Did you know that there is always water with God? God is life and even scientists will tell us that where there is water there is life! We can note from the Bible that there was water even before God created the universe for us! And in eternal heaven where God is, we can read in the Book of Revelation Chapter 22… the angel showed me the river of the water of life, as clear as crystal, flowing from the throne of God and of the Lamb down the middle of the great street of the city. On each side of the river stood the tree of life, bearing twelve crops of fruit, yielding its fruit every month. And the leaves of the tree are for the healing of the nations. No longer will there be any curse.

About 2000 years ago when God Jesus Christ was human flesh on earth, He came by a community water well which provided sustenance for daily living. Without clean physical water there would be no physical life! Many of you know that our physical bodies are about 65% water! If someone took all the water out of our bodies we would be just like this... Without water we would all be just dust of dry chemicals! Our physical bodies need clean water! This is why we get thirsty!! It's God's plan that we live with water!

But here’s what Jesus said to the woman getting water from that community well… “Everyone who drinks this water will be thirsty again, but whoever drinks the water I give them will never thirst. Indeed, the water I give them will become in them a spring of water welling up to eternal life.” The woman said to him, “Sir, give me this water so that I won’t get thirsty and have to keep coming here to draw water.”

This woman is just like all of us; there's a purpose for thirst, but we all have a tendency to be lazy to work for it. As I will note later, this is also applicable to our spiritual lives!

What can we quickly learn from this real life story? God Jesus affirmed the need for physical water but also affirmed people’s need for spiritual water! And when a person takes in this spiritual water, there will be a constant flow of this water within one’s self which leads to eternity! Now because God is eternal, whoever drinks of this spiritual water, that person will be with God forever!

What is this spiritual living water? Jesus said the spiritual living water which refreshes from within and leads to eternal life with God comes from Him!

We can note that the woman at the well was confused with what Jesus was saying. Some of you may be also be confused. And so, Jesus explained further in John 7:37-39… Jesus stood and said in a loud voice, “Let anyone who is thirsty come to me and drink. Whoever believes in me, as Scripture has said, rivers of living water will flow from within them.” By this he meant the Spirit, whom those who believed in him were later to receive. Up to that time the Spirit had not been given, since Jesus had not yet been glorified.

And so, the spiritual living water that people need for spiritual refreshment and eternal life is God the Holy Spirit available to anyone who believes in Jesus Christ. We must all believe in Jesus Christ who is God and our Only Savior from our sins, then the wellspring of living water, the Holy Spirit will flow from within us!

Now let me close with this: Some of us may say “I believe in Jesus Christ but I don’t sense the flowing of the Holy Spirit within me!” Here’s what God tells Believers of Christ in 1 Thessalonians 5… Do not quench the Spirit. Do not treat prophecies with contempt but test them all; hold on to what is good, reject every kind of evil. We Christians can quench the flow of spiritual living water within us when we question God’s Word and accept evil! Just like we should not drink dirty toxic water, spiritually, we must not take in evil!

Do you desire to have peace, joy, and love like a clean flowing river in your soul?

Do not believe in polluted spirituality; Believe in Jesus Christ!

Do not drink toxic waters of evil; Drink the truth of God’s Word daily!

Remember what would happen if all physical water is taken out of our bodies…. We will just be dust! In a similar way, if we don’t drink the spiritual living water by believing in Jesus Christ, our spirits will also be just like dust! Drink the truth of Jesus Christ every day!
