The Benefits and Dangers of Routine Text: I Corinthians 10:31

31 Therefore, whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God.

Routine is necessary. Getting up and lying down, brushing your teeth and eating right are all requirements to feel well and to look your best. A work ethic is very important! The fact is a person without any routine would be an individual in trouble! Routine is good for us, just as long as it doesn’t become mundane. Vs. 31 is the key … whatever you do, do all to the glory of God. Therefore, there has to be balance. Someone without routine would have nothing to look forward to; they would become depressed and sick emotionally and physically because God created everyone to stay busy!

I. The dangers of routine can be found within its very name. Routine: the usual sequence for a set of activities. Something that is unvarying or boringly repetitive.

A. After Jesus’ disciples were filled with the Spirit everything that once was routine became new and fresh!

B. Acts 2 became the routine buster for the apostles! Everything they once took for granted was now new!

C. Paul tells us in Ephesians 5: 15-21 Be very careful, then, how you live—not as unwise but as wise, 16making the most of every opportunity, because the days are evil. 17Therefore do not be foolish, but understand what the Lord’s will is. 18Do not get drunk on wine, which leads to debauchery. Instead, be filled with the Spirit. 19Speak to one another with psalms, hymns and spiritual songs. Sing and make music in your heart to the Lord, 20always giving thanks to God the Father for everything, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ. 21Submit to one another out of reverence for Christ.

D. I Cor. 10:31 …Do all to the glory of God. Eph. 5:21 Submit to one another out of reverence for Christ. (If you do what you do for God’s glory you will be okay!)

E. Let’s read about the early apostles after Pentecost. Acts 2:46-47 tells us how everything which was routine became fresh again! 46. So continuing daily with one accord in the temple, and breaking bread from house to house, they ate their food with gladness and simplicity of heart, 47 praising God and having favor with all the people. And the Lord added to the church daily those who were being saved.

F. The benefits of routine are only seen as benefits after a great awakening. The things you once took for granted are now fresh and new!

G. The dangers of routine are: 1. Greeting other’s out of habit. 2. Pray because I should. 3. Smile to keep appearance. 4. Attend Church (Get a 5 yr. pen) 5. Stand up and go through the motions. 6. Act Spiritual. 7. Wear the right clothes. 8. Tithe because it’s the right thing to do! Results: You’ll get angry and start finding fault in others; you’ll hate church and make yourself go!

H. The benefits of routine are: 1. You’ll love to pray for others in need. 2. You’ll love everyone fervently. 3. You’ll become very fruitful. 4. You’ll increase the gifts or talents God’s given you! 5. You’ll live joyful and full of God. 6. You’ll get to see your family, friends and meet new people! 7. Worship and enter into God’s domain! 8. Grow in Christ. 9. You’ll get to tithe and give to the building program! 10. You’ll watch your children become like you are! 11. You’ll have a better marriage. 12. You’ll have real friends! 13. You’ll know you will enjoy heaven!

I. So what keeps routine a good thing? Psalm 37:4 Delight yourself also in the LORD, and He shall give you the desires of your heart.
