Learn from the mistakes of the Pharisees: (1) Don’t be too caught up by the outward, it’s the heart that counts; (2) Don’t be too caught up by what man thinks; it’s what God thinks that counts.

We are all creatures of habit. We do many things over and over again. • There is nothing wrong with that. There will surely be routines in life. • But the danger comes when we get so accustomed to them, that we no longer understand the reason why we are doing them. • If fact, we may have lost its ...read more

As humans we naturally try to do what is in our own best self interest. This doesn't always coincide with the character of God. Such is the case with divorce. Jesus shocks His men and the Pharisees with a refreshing look at relationships. As we look at th

In Jesus' Sermon on the Mount, He says that we need to be more righteous than the Pharisees and the Scribes in order for us to enter the Kingdom. These were the people who were perceived to have been the most righteous. How can we compete with them?

INTRODUCTION We are busy with a series on The Sermon on the Mount. We looked at the theme of the sermon, which is the Gospel of the Kingdom of Heaven. We looked at the character and the blessedness of the citizens of heaven - The beatitudes. We looked at us needing to be the salt and the light of ...read more

Contributed by Chris Appleby on Feb 23, 2015
     | 4,020 views

The Pharisees try to trap Jesus by questioning his authority, by asking about taxes paid to Caesar, the resurrection and which Law is greatest. Jesus rebuts all their attacks. But the battle isn't over. Satan continues his attacks on us today.

Sermon by Rev George Hemmings During my time at Ridley, one of the highlights was the debates. Sometimes there’d be big debates in class, as we tried to wrap our heads around big theological ideas. But the really great debates were the ones the student body organized. Two small teams of ...read more

Contributed by Alison Bucklin on Jul 3, 2023
     | 1,585 views

The Pharisees paid lip service to God, but were actually operating under their own power, for their own agendas, not God's. That is why they didn't really want to be told that Jesus was operating under God's authority.

“Who do you think you are? What right have you to tell me what to think?” Has anyone ever said that to you? It’s not very pleasant. But it happened to me, once. Back when I was just starting seminary. I had run into an acquaintance of mine named Nora. She was pretty vulnerable and sensitive to ...read more

Jesus contrasts a prideful Pharisee and a formerly promiscuous sinner desperate for grace. One is changed forever and one is unchanged. The difference: pride vs. humility. We all are in need of a Savior. Sadly, some don't realize it until it is too late.

Luke 7:36-50 Pride and Promiscuity The sermon title for today’s story is in honor of my wife, who first introduced me to Jane Austen’s “Pride and Prejudice,” a classic tale of two strong-willed and misunderstood personalities coming together in romantic love. But ...read more
