The angels played a major role in the Christmas story. They announced the birth of Christ to both Mary and Joseph, and helped them work out the complexities of the virgin birth. Angels announced His birth to the shepherds and sang the first Christmas song--Glory to God in The Highest.

The birth of Jesus Christ was not revealed to kings or rulers. It was not revealed to the religious elite. When God came to earth, He let the world know by announcing the birth of His Son to lowly shepherds.

Why does Matthew add the story of the slaughter of the baby boys in Bethlehem. First becasue it is fact and second to trigger assocaiations between Jesus birth and Moses birth (see details in sermon)
