"Splagchnizomai" is the Greek word that Mark uses to describe the depth of compassion Jesus had on the crowd of people that were like sheep without a shepherd. How can we have this kind of love?

COMPASSION FATIGUE! WHAT IS IT? THE ACTUAL DEFINITION IS “INDIFFERENCE TO CHARITABLE APPEALS ON BEHALF OF THOSE WHO ARE SUFFERING, EXPERIENCED AS A RESULT OF THE FREQUENCY OR NUMBER OF SUCH APPEALS.” COMPASSION FATIGUE IS FAR GREATER THAN JUST BEING “TIRED” AND SHOULD NOT BE MISTAKEN FOR BURNOUT. ...read more

  • "Take Courage! Don’t Be Afraid”

Contributed by Michael Otterstatter on Aug 6, 2024
     | 800 views

As we join Jesus’ disciples on the Sea of Galilee, we are invited to take a look into our own hearts and see the greatest source of our fears. And then we are invited to dispel all our fears through faith in Christ. We’ll use Jesus’ words as the theme for our sermon.

The medical and scientific word for them is “phobia.” And there are hundreds, if not thousands, of them. From Arachnophobia—the fear of spiders to Zoophobia- the fear of animals there are nearly endless things that people fear. Perhaps you have a couple of phobias that affect you to greater or ...read more

  • Sibling Jealousy: James' (Eventual) Turning To Jesus

Contributed by Jessica Linde on Sep 1, 2024
     | 394 views

By considering how sibling relationships can often be contentious, this sermon's ultimate message is that we can't rule out God's ability to radically change people's hearts, because He ultimately radically changed the heart of James the "brother" of Jesus.

Have any of you made it as far into the watching The Chosen as season 3…? Okay, a handful of you. That’s okay. I promise no spoilers from me today! Well… I mean… we do know how the Gospel stories conclude (with Christ’s death, resurrection, and ascension), so I guess the biggest spoiler is already ...read more

We tend in our enthusiasm to forget that WE are not the saviors of the world. The world already has one of those, and He is unmatchable.

Saturday of the Fourth Week in Course 2024 Today St. Mark’s Gospel interjects a short story about Jesus counseling His disciples how to be effective missionaries. ‘And he said to them, "Come away by yourselves to a lonely place, and rest a while."’ The great saints advise similar rest ...read more

  • Agnostic Nazarenes - Mark 6:1-6 Series

Contributed by Darrell Ferguson on Oct 19, 2023
     | 1,587 views

In his hometown, the people didn’t believe Jesus because he was a local handyman. Such an irrational conclusion is due to living by feeling instead of fact. Agnosticism is an effort to justify ignorance.

Mark 6:1 Jesus left there and went to his hometown, accompanied by his disciples. 2 When the Sabbath came, he began to teach in the synagogue, and many who heard him were amazed. “Where did this man get these things?” they asked. “What’s this wisdom that has been given him and such miraculous ...read more

After many months of training, Jesus finally sends out the 12 to preach. He empowers them with the same miracles he did to show they were doing his work by his authority and power. Rejection of them meant forfeiting Jewishness.

Mark 6:7 Calling the Twelve to him, he sent them out two by two and gave them authority over evil spirits. 8 These were his instructions: “Take nothing for the journey except a staff—no bread, no bag, no money in your belts. 9 Wear sandals but not an extra tunic. 10 Whenever you enter a house, stay ...read more

Herod liked to listen to John but remained perplexed instead of repenting. The great “king” became powerless before a little girl because of his bondage to lust, pride, and the idol of human approval.

Mark 6:14 King Herod heard about this, for Jesus’ name had become well known. Some were saying, “John the Baptist has been raised from the dead, and that is why miraculous powers are at work in him.” 15 Others said, “He is Elijah.” And still others claimed, “He is a prophet, like one of the ...read more
