The word "atonement" is missing from the New Testament in many translations. The NIV does use it three times, two of which refer to the sacrifice of Christ.

When we examined the word "atonement," we discovered that the idea of compensation is paramount in the Old Testament. In the New Testment we discovered that Jesus is the compensation for our sins, and to offer anything else is to insult the Spirit of grace.
