Summary: Job 1-2 reveals Satan’s limitations. Satan is not God’s equal opposite. Unlike God, Satan isn’t omnipresent (everywhere), omnipotent (all-powerful) or omniscient (all-knowing). This session’s focus: Satan isn’t omniscient, Satan isn’t eternal.

Satan Is Not OMNISCIENT (All-Knowing)

Remember at the opening of the first scene, God asked Satan, “From where have you come?” Job 1:7

Since God is omniscient (all-knowing), He doesn’t need to ask this question. He already knew where Satan had been. Satan had been where God put him. As we have already found in Scripture, God cast Satan from Heaven. He cast Satan to the earth, and there he remained.

Satan didn’t know what the outcome would be.

Satan thought by destroying all that Job had, Job would turn from God. But Job didn’t; he remained faithful.

Satan thought by taking Job’s health, Job would turn from God. But Job didn’t; he remained faithful.

But God wasn’t surprised by the outcome, because He knows the end in the beginning.

Satan isn’t omniscient, but God IS. God knows everything: past, present and future. You won’t find the word “omniscient” in the Bible, but many verses support this concept. Here are several of them.

Declaring the end from the beginning,

and from ancient times the things that are not yet done… Isaiah 46:10

There is no searching of his understanding. Isaiah 40:28

Others translations say:

No one can find them his understanding.

There is no limit to his understanding

Great is our Lord and of great power. His understanding is infinite. Psalm 147:5

All things are naked and opened unto the eyes of him… Hebrews 4:13

I am he which searches the reins and hearts (mind and emotions): and I will give to every one of you according to your works. Revelation 2:23

Because the righteous God tries the hearts and reins. Psalm 7:9

O LORD, you have searched me and known me.

You know my sitting down and my rising up,

You understand my thought afar off.

You compass my path and my lying down,

and are acquainted with all my ways.

Because there isn’t a word in my tongue,

but, lo, O LORD, you know it altogether.

Because you have possessed my reins:

In my mother's womb, you have covered me.

How great is the sum of Your thoughts!

Psalm 139:1-4,13,17

I know your works, and charity, and service, and faith, and your patience, and your works. Revelation 2:19

For as the heavens are higher than the earth,

so are my ways higher than your ways,

and my thoughts than your thoughts. Isaiah 55:9

Satan is NOT Eternal

Satan was created.

The workmanship of your tabrets and of your pipes was prepared in you in the day that you were created. You are the anointed cherub that covers; and I have set (appointed) you so… You were perfect in your ways from the day that you were created, till unrighteousness was found in you. Ezekiel 28:13-15

God is Eternal

Lord, You have been our dwelling place in all generations.

Before the mountains were brought forth,

or before You had formed the earth and the world,

even from everlasting to everlasting, You are God.

For a thousand years in Your sight

are but as yesterday when it is past. Psalm 90:1-2,4

To make all men see what is the fellowship of the mystery, which from the beginning of the world has been hid in God, who created all things by Jesus Christ:

To the intent that now the church might make known the manifold wisdom of God for the principalities and powers in heavenly places, according to the eternal purpose which He purposed in Christ Jesus our Lord: Ephesians 3:10-11

So says the high and lofty One

Who inhabits eternity, whose name is Holy;

I dwell in the high and holy place. Isaiah 57:15

I am Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the end. Revelation 21:6
