#14~ Judas Iscariot: -- pt.2~ APOSTLES 3-8-14
~ Today we'll continue with our study to do with the Apostles, last broadcast was #13, it was to do with Judas Iscariot, and the number 13 was the appropriate number for Judas as the number 13 is the number to do with wickedness and depravity.
Listen the name "JUDAS ISCARIOT" has 13 letters in it, Judas is found in the 13th. Chapter of John, we read about Judas in John 13: and verse 26, which is 2 x13.
>John 13: 26 Jesus answered, He it is, to whom I shall give a sop, when I have dipped it. And when he had dipped the sop, he gave it to Judas Iscariot, the son of Simon.
Obviously we can't go over all that was said last time to do with Judas Iscariot.
------------
~ It seems that Judas made up his mind to betray Jesus at the time Mary anointed Jesus feet and head with a very expensive ointment of spikenard.
-----
>Jn.12:1-8 Then Jesus six days before the Passover came to Bethany, where Lazarus was which had been dead, whom he raised from the dead. 2There they made him a supper; and Martha served: but Lazarus was one of them that sat at the table with him.
3Then took Mary a pound of ointment of spikenard, very costly, and anointed the feet of Jesus, (Matt. 26:7 tells us His head as well) and wiped his feet with her hair: and the house was filled with the odour of the ointment.
4Then saith one of his disciples, Judas Iscariot, Simon's son, which should betray him,
5Why was not this ointment sold for three hundred pence, and given to the poor?
6 This he said, not that he cared for the poor; but because he was a thief, and had the bag, and bare what was put therein.
7Then said Jesus, Let her alone: against the day of my burying hath she kept this. 8For the poor always ye have with you; but me ye have not always.
-------
* Judas's remarks caused the others to say the same thing.
>Matt. 26 8But when his disciples saw it, they had indignation, saying, To what purpose is this waste? 9For this ointment might have been sold for much, and given to the poor
------
~ 300 pence or 300 denarias was about what an average working man made in a year, it was a lot of money at that time, and 300 pence would have been that much more money for Judas steal from.
* A penny represented a day's wage, in a parable that Jesus gave in;
>Matt. 20:1- 2 For the kingdom of heaven is like unto a man that is an householder, which went out early in the morning to hire labourers into his vineyard. 2And when he had agreed with the labourers for a penny a day, he sent them into his vineyard.
--------------
~When Jesus openly rebuked Judas this seems to have been the turning point in Judas's thinking. -- This is the first time in the bible as for as we know, that Judas spoke out as an individual, he had kept his bitterness and hypocrisy hid.
------
~Listen as I read Matthews account of that same incident.
>Matt. 26: 6 --12 Now when Jesus was in Bethany, in the house of Simon the leper, 7There came unto him a woman having an alabaster box of very precious *(expensive) ointment, and poured it on his head, as he sat at meat. 8But when his disciples saw it, they had indignation, saying, To what purpose is this waste? 9For this ointment might have been sold for much, and given to the poor.
10When Jesus understood it, he said unto them, Why trouble ye the woman? for she hath wrought a good work upon me.
11For ye have the poor always with you; but me ye have not always. 12For in that she hath poured this ointment on my body, she did it for my burial.
-----
> Matt.26: 14-16 Then * (after the incident of the ointment) one of the twelve, called Judas Iscariot, went unto the chief priests,
15And said unto them, What will ye give me, and I will deliver him unto you? And they covenanted with him for thirty pieces of silver.
- NOTICE; immediately after Jesus rebuked Judas, Judas slipped away from the others, he left Bethany and walked about a mile or so to Jerusalem, met with the chief priests, and sold Jesus to His enemies for thirty pieces of silver.
-- 30 pieces of silver was the price of a servant when killed by some one else's beast.
>Ex. 21:32 If the ox shall push a manservant or a maidservant; he shall give unto their master thirty shekels of silver,
-----
>16And from that time he sought opportunity to betray him.
~Notice "from that time," Judas was looking for the best opportunity, the best time to betray Him, it was not done suddenly, Judas was looking for the best time. -- This reveals even more so how conniving he was.
~ Listen, after Judas had taken the 30 pieces of silver to betray Jesus, he came back to where the others were, he walks in like nothing has happened.
~ Listen, Judas did what he did willingly, without any coercion. -- Satan could not force him to betray Jesus, but Satan being the deceiver that he is, put it into Judas's mind to do this thing, Satan was the director make no mistake.
~ The devil didn't realize at the time that the crucifixion of Jesus would seal his doom. -- Jesus said in;
>John 12: 32-33 And I, if I be lifted up from the earth, will draw all men unto me. 33 This he said, signifying what death he should die.
--------
~ Judas's heart was so hostile to the truth and so filled with evil that he became a willing instrument of Satan himself.
---------
~ It was at this point that Jesus gave the apostles a lesson in humility by washing their feet. -- He washed the feet of all twelve, which means He even washed the feet of Judas. -- Judas sat there and let Jesus wash his feet as though nothing had happened.
* Listen to what happens next:
>John 13:1-31 Now before the feast of the Passover, when Jesus knew that his hour was come that he should depart out of this world unto the Father, having loved his own which were in the world, he loved them unto the end.
2And supper being ended, the devil having now put into the heart of Judas Iscariot, Simon's son, to betray him; -"Notice the deed already done."
3Jesus knowing that the Father had given all things into his hands, and that he was come from God, and went to God;
4He riseth from supper, and laid aside his garments; and took a towel, and girded himself. -- Jesus puts a towel around Him to dry their feet, Jesus was about to give them a lesson on humility.
5After that he poureth water into a bason, and began to wash the disciples' feet, and to wipe them with the towel wherewith he was girded.
6Then cometh he to Simon Peter: and Peter saith unto him, Lord, dost thou wash my feet?
7Jesus answered and said unto him, What I do thou knowest not now; but thou shalt know hereafter.
8Peter saith unto him, Thou shalt never wash my feet. Jesus answered him, If I wash thee not, thou hast no part with me.
9Simon Peter saith unto him, Lord, not my feet only, but also my hands and my head.
10Jesus saith to him, He that is washed needeth not save *(except) to wash his feet, but is clean every whit: and ye are clean, but not all.
11For he knew who should betray him; therefore said he, Ye are not all clean. 12So after he had washed their feet, and had taken his garments, and was set down again, he said unto them, Know ye what I have done to you?
13Ye call me Master and Lord: and ye say well; for so I am. 14If I then, your Lord and Master, have washed your feet; ye also ought to wash one another's feet. 15For I have given you an example, (notice foot washing is not an ordinance, it was an example of humility) that ye should do as I have done to you.
Some churches have foot washings, and there's certainly nothing wrong with it, but it's not an ordinance, remember Jesus washed their feet illustrating humility.
16Verily, verily, I say unto you, The servant is not greater than his lord; neither he that is sent greater than he that sent him. 17If ye know these things, happy are ye if ye do them.
18I speak not of you all: I know whom I have chosen: but that the scripture may be fulfilled, He that eateth bread with me hath * (past tense) lifted up his heel against me.
* Here is fulfilled the prophecy in;
>Psalm 41: 9Yea, mine own familiar friend, in whom I trusted, which did eat of my bread, hath lifted up his heel against me.
----------
19Now I tell you before it come, that, when it is come to pass, ye may believe that I am he. 20Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that receiveth whomsoever I send receiveth me; and he that receiveth me receiveth him that sent me.
----
21When Jesus had thus said, he was troubled in spirit, and testified, and said, Verily, verily, (Johns gospel has 25 "verily verily's" in it- meaning truly truly, the other 3 gospels have single verily's) I say unto you, that one of you shall betray me.
22Then the disciples looked one on another, doubting of whom he spake. 23Now there was leaning on Jesus' bosom one of his disciples, whom Jesus loved. -- This is John; remember John never mentions his own name in his gospel.
24Simon Peter therefore beckoned to him, (Peter motions to John) that he should ask who it should be of whom he spake.
25He then lying on Jesus' breast saith unto him, Lord, who is it?
26Jesus answered, He it is, to whom I shall give a sop, when I have dipped it. And when he had dipped the sop, he gave it to Judas Iscariot, the son of Simon. -Evidently only John heard the explanation of Judas taking the sop.
27And after the sop Satan entered into him. -- Satan now takes complete control of Judas -- Then said Jesus unto him, That thou doest, do quickly.
28Now no man at the table knew for what intent he spake this unto him.
~The Lord knew what Judas would do, there was no coercion with Judas, Judas was set in his own heart and mind, and nothing would or could change him.
29For some of them thought, because Judas had the bag, that Jesus had said unto him, Buy those things that we have need of against the feast; or, that he should give something to the poor. -- Notice, even at this point, none of the others suspected Judas to be a traitor.
30He then (Judas) having received the sop went immediately out: and it was night. -- Notice, As Judas went out from the Savior to betray Him, he was surrounded by darkness. This symbolizes the evil and sin surrounding the action of Judas.
31Therefore, when he was gone out, Jesus said, Now is the Son of man glorified, and God is glorified in him.
-------
* In Matthews account of the same happening we read in;
>Matt. 26: 20-25 Now when the even was come, he sat down with the twelve.** 21And as they did eat, he said, Verily I say unto you, that one of you shall betray me. 22And they were exceeding sorrowful, and began every one of them to say unto him, Lord, is it I? -- (perhaps they knew what Jeremiah said in, Jeremiah 17: 9The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately wicked: who can know it?)
23And he answered and said, He that dippeth his hand with me in the dish, the same shall betray me.
24 The Son of man goeth as it is written of him: but woe unto that man by whom the Son of man is betrayed! it had been good for that man if he had not been born.
25Then Judas, which betrayed him, answered and said, Master, is it I? He said unto him, Thou hast said. -- Notice, Judas don't call Jesus Lord like the others, he always called Him Master.
~ It's at this point that Jesus sends Judas out to betray Him according to
John 13: 30 He then (Judas) having received the sop went immediately out: and it was night.
---------
~ Notice, Jesus sent him away; here was this evil presence into whom Satan had literally entered. -- Jesus was not about to have the first communion service with the devil and Judas present in the room. -- Only after Judas had left did the Lord institute the Lord's Supper.
-------
-- At the church I attend we partake of the Lords supper the 1st. Sunday night of each month, there's no set time for churches to partake of the Lords supper, each church picks a time to do this. -- This is one of two ordnances Baptist churches partake of, the other is water baptism, water baptism is an out- ward showing of an inward change, it has nothing to do with a person's salvation.
-------
~So at the very moment when Jesus was instituting the Lords Supper in the Upper Room, Judas was making arrangements for His capture. --
* The next time we see Judas is in;
>John 18:1- 5 When Jesus had spoken these words, he went forth with his disciples over the brook Cedron, where was a garden, (Gethsemane) into the which he entered, and his disciples.
2And Judas also, which betrayed him, knew the place: for Jesus oft-times resorted thither with his disciples.
-------------
>Mark 14: 44And he that betrayed him had given them a token, saying, Whomsoever I shall kiss, that same is he; take him, and lead him away safely.
(Meaning to bind him up securely and lead him away)
-----------
~Listen, when the soldiers came to take Jesus away, Jesus stepped forward and told who He was, there was no need for Judas to kiss Him.
>John 18: 3Judas then, having received a band of men and officers from the chief priests and Pharisees, cometh thither with lanterns and torches and weapons.
4Jesus therefore, knowing all things that should come upon him, went forth, and said unto them, Whom seek ye?
5They answered him, Jesus of Nazareth. Jesus saith unto them, I am he. And Judas also, which betrayed him, stood with them.
-----
~Luke tells us what Judas did;
>Luke 22: 47-48 And while he yet spake, behold a multitude, and he that was called Judas, one of the twelve, went before them, and drew near unto Jesus to kiss him. --- 48But Jesus said unto him, Judas, betrayest thou the Son of man with a kiss?
---------------------
>Mark 14: 45And as soon as he was come, (Judas) he goeth straightway to him, and saith, Master, master; and kissed him. 46And they laid their hands on him, and took him.
~ So this signal was not necessary, but the hypocrite Judas being still possessed of the devil kissed Him any way.
Listen next time as we conclude our study, we'll see Judas committing suicide and we're told that he went to his own place.
