2025.06.29 Our Inheritance through the Finished Work of Christ

William Akehurst, HSWC

BIG IDEA: Our Inheritance in Christ is Living in Victory, Intimacy, and Purpose.

Our inheritance is not earned; it is received through the finished work of Christ.

Intimacy with God is an invitation to let Him truly "in-to-me-see."

SCRIPTURES: Isaiah 59:16-19, Romans 15:5-6, Romans 15:13, Philippians 1:2-6, Philippians 1:9-11, 1 Thessalonians 5:23-24, Colossians 3:12-17, Ephesians 3:13-21, 2 Timothy 1:7, John 12:31-33

GOD INTERVENED – The Power of HIS Salvation

GOD TOOK ACTION WHEN MAN COULD NOT

Isaiah 59:16-19

16 He saw that there was no man, And wondered that there was no intercessor; Therefore His own arm brought salvation for Him; And His own righteousness, it sustained Him.

17 For He put on righteousness as a breastplate, And a helmet of salvation on His head; He put on the garments of vengeance for clothing, And was clad with zeal as a cloak.

18 According to their deeds, accordingly He will repay, Fury to His adversaries, Recompense to His enemies; The coastlands He will fully repay.

19 So shall they fear The name of the LORD from the west, And His glory from the rising of the sun; When the enemy comes in like a flood, The Spirit of the LORD will lift up a standard against him.

POINT: GOD steps in as Savior, Warrior, and Intercessor.

• HE saw there was no intercessor.

• HE put on righteousness and zeal.

• HE raises a standard against the enemy through HIS SPIRIT.

APPLICATION: The battle belongs to the LORD. We rest in what He has already won.

• YET WE ARE TO BE ARMORED IN CHRIST! (See “Daily Warrior’s Prayer”)

KEY POINT: OUR INHERITANCE IS ROOTED IN GOD’S INITIATIVE, NOT OUR EFFORT.

GOD’S CHARACTER – THE GOD OF HOPE, COMFORT, PEACE, AND PURPOSE

Romans 15:5-6 5 Now may the God of patience and comfort grant you to be like-minded toward one another, according to Christ Jesus, 6 that you may with one mind and one mouth glorify the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ.

Romans 15:13 Now may the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, that you may abound in hope by the power of the Holy Spirit.

1 Thessalonians 5:23-24 23 Now may the God of peace Himself sanctify you completely; and may your whole spirit, soul, and body be preserved blameless at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ. 24 He who calls you is faithful, who also will do it.

POINT: HE is faithful to sanctify us completely, preserving spirit, soul, and body.

HE desires unity, joy, and fullness through the Spirit.

POINT: GOD gives hope, patience, and comfort so we can glorify HIM with one mind and one mouth.

KEY POINT: The nature of our inheritance reflects His nature.

GOD’S WORK – HE WILL FINISH WHAT HE STARTED

Philippians 1:2-6 2 Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.

3 I thank my God upon every remembrance of you, 4 always in every prayer of mine making request for you all with joy, 5 for your fellowship in the gospel from the first day until now, 6 being confident of this very thing, that He who has begun a good work in you will complete it until the day of Jesus Christ;

Philippians 1:9-11 9 And this I pray, that your love may abound still more and more in knowledge and all discernment, 10 that you may approve the things that are excellent, that you may be sincere and without offense till the day of Christ, 11 being filled with the fruits of righteousness which are by Jesus Christ, to the glory and praise of God.

POINT: GOD begins a good work in us and will complete it. We grow in love, knowledge, discernment, and righteousness through CHRIST.

• God began a good work and will complete it.

• His goal is that we abound in love, discernment, and fruitfulness.

KEY POINT: Spiritual maturity is part of our inheritance and calling.

GOD’S WARDROBE – What We Put On in Christ

LIVING OUT OUR INHERITANCE: WALKING IN THE NEW NATURE

Colossians 3:12-17 12 Therefore, as the elect of God, holy and beloved, put on tender mercies, kindness, humility, meekness, longsuffering; 13 bearing with one another, and forgiving one another, if anyone has a complaint against another; even as Christ forgave you, so you also must do. 14 But above all these things put on love, which is the bond of perfection. 15 And let the peace of God rule in your hearts, to which also you were called in one body; and be thankful. 16 Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom, teaching and admonishing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with grace in your hearts to the Lord. 17 And whatever you do in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through Him.
