2025.06.29 Our Inheritance through the Finished Work of Christ
William Akehurst, HSWC
BIG IDEA: Our Inheritance in Christ is Living in Victory, Intimacy, and Purpose.
Our inheritance is not earned; it is received through the finished work of Christ.
Intimacy with God is an invitation to let Him truly "in-to-me-see."
SCRIPTURES: Isaiah 59:16-19, Romans 15:5-6, Romans 15:13, Philippians 1:2-6, Philippians 1:9-11, 1 Thessalonians 5:23-24, Colossians 3:12-17, Ephesians 3:13-21, 2 Timothy 1:7, John 12:31-33
GOD INTERVENED – The Power of HIS Salvation
GOD TOOK ACTION WHEN MAN COULD NOT
Isaiah 59:16-19
16 He saw that there was no man, And wondered that there was no intercessor; Therefore His own arm brought salvation for Him; And His own righteousness, it sustained Him.
17 For He put on righteousness as a breastplate, And a helmet of salvation on His head; He put on the garments of vengeance for clothing, And was clad with zeal as a cloak.
18 According to their deeds, accordingly He will repay, Fury to His adversaries, Recompense to His enemies; The coastlands He will fully repay.
19 So shall they fear The name of the LORD from the west, And His glory from the rising of the sun; When the enemy comes in like a flood, The Spirit of the LORD will lift up a standard against him.
POINT: GOD steps in as Savior, Warrior, and Intercessor.
• HE saw there was no intercessor.
• HE put on righteousness and zeal.
• HE raises a standard against the enemy through HIS SPIRIT.
APPLICATION: The battle belongs to the LORD. We rest in what He has already won.
• YET WE ARE TO BE ARMORED IN CHRIST! (See “Daily Warrior’s Prayer”)
KEY POINT: OUR INHERITANCE IS ROOTED IN GOD’S INITIATIVE, NOT OUR EFFORT.
GOD’S CHARACTER – THE GOD OF HOPE, COMFORT, PEACE, AND PURPOSE
Romans 15:5-6 5 Now may the God of patience and comfort grant you to be like-minded toward one another, according to Christ Jesus, 6 that you may with one mind and one mouth glorify the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ.
Romans 15:13 Now may the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, that you may abound in hope by the power of the Holy Spirit.
1 Thessalonians 5:23-24 23 Now may the God of peace Himself sanctify you completely; and may your whole spirit, soul, and body be preserved blameless at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ. 24 He who calls you is faithful, who also will do it.
POINT: HE is faithful to sanctify us completely, preserving spirit, soul, and body.
HE desires unity, joy, and fullness through the Spirit.
POINT: GOD gives hope, patience, and comfort so we can glorify HIM with one mind and one mouth.
KEY POINT: The nature of our inheritance reflects His nature.
GOD’S WORK – HE WILL FINISH WHAT HE STARTED
Philippians 1:2-6 2 Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.
3 I thank my God upon every remembrance of you, 4 always in every prayer of mine making request for you all with joy, 5 for your fellowship in the gospel from the first day until now, 6 being confident of this very thing, that He who has begun a good work in you will complete it until the day of Jesus Christ;
Philippians 1:9-11 9 And this I pray, that your love may abound still more and more in knowledge and all discernment, 10 that you may approve the things that are excellent, that you may be sincere and without offense till the day of Christ, 11 being filled with the fruits of righteousness which are by Jesus Christ, to the glory and praise of God.
POINT: GOD begins a good work in us and will complete it. We grow in love, knowledge, discernment, and righteousness through CHRIST.
• God began a good work and will complete it.
• His goal is that we abound in love, discernment, and fruitfulness.
KEY POINT: Spiritual maturity is part of our inheritance and calling.
GOD’S WARDROBE – What We Put On in Christ
LIVING OUT OUR INHERITANCE: WALKING IN THE NEW NATURE
Colossians 3:12-17 12 Therefore, as the elect of God, holy and beloved, put on tender mercies, kindness, humility, meekness, longsuffering; 13 bearing with one another, and forgiving one another, if anyone has a complaint against another; even as Christ forgave you, so you also must do. 14 But above all these things put on love, which is the bond of perfection. 15 And let the peace of God rule in your hearts, to which also you were called in one body; and be thankful. 16 Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom, teaching and admonishing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with grace in your hearts to the Lord. 17 And whatever you do in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through Him.
POINT: As GOD’s chosen, we put on mercy, kindness, humility, forgiveness, and above all, love.
• Let peace rule, let the Word dwell, let gratitude overflow.
• Let: peace rule, the Word dwell, gratitude flow.
• Do: everything in Jesus’ name.
APPLICATION: What we’ve received in CHRIST should manifest in how we treat others.
KEY POINT: Our new life is clothed in Christ—reflecting our identity.
GOD’S POWER – Strengthened from Within
ROOTED IN LOVE, STRENGTHENED IN THE INNER MAN
Ephesians 3:13-21 13 Therefore I ask that you do not lose heart at my tribulations for you, which is your glory.
14 For this reason I bow my knees to the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, 15 from whom the whole family in heaven and earth is named, 16 that He would grant you, according to the riches of His glory, to be strengthened with might through His Spirit in the inner man, 17 that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith; that you, being rooted and grounded in love, 18 may be able to comprehend with all the saints what is the width and length and depth and height— 19 to know the love of Christ which passes knowledge; that you may be filled with all the fullness of God.
20 Now to Him who is able to do exceedingly abundantly above all that we ask or think, according to the power that works in us, 21 to Him be glory in the church by Christ Jesus to all generations, forever and ever. Amen.
Paul prays we be strengthened in the inner man, rooted in love, and filled with the fullness of God.
POINT: God can do exceedingly abundantly above all we ask or think—through His power in us.
• Strengthened in the inner man.
• Rooted and grounded in love.
• Filled with the fullness of God.
• God works exceedingly abundantly beyond our imagination.
APPLICATION: The measure of our inheritance is not limited by us…it’s only accessed by faith and intimacy.
KEY POINT: Our inheritance includes spiritual power and deep love.
GOD’S GIFT – Spirit of Power, Love, and Sound Mind
NOT FEARFUL, BUT EMPOWERED
2 Timothy 1:7 For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind.
POINT: Our inheritance includes a sound mind, power, and love—not fear.
APPLICATION: This is part of the spiritual identity we put on daily.
• We do not walk in fear but in kingdom authority.
KEY POINT: Fear is not part of our inheritance—faith is.
GOD’S PLAN – Victory Through the Cross
THE CROSS AND THE DRAW OF CHRIST
John 12:31-33 31 Now is the judgment of this world; now the ruler of this world will be cast out. 32 And I, if I am lifted up from the earth, will draw all peoples to Myself.” 33 This He said, signifying by what death He would die.
POINT: JESUS, lifted up on the cross, draws all to HIMSELF. Our access, inheritance, and intimacy are through HIS death and resurrection.
• HE defeated the ruler of this world. The enemy is judged and cast out.
APPLICATION: Our victory is not future…it is finished!
KEY POINT: The cross secured our inheritance—our victory is won.
REFLECTION THOUGHTS: "In-to-me-see"
When we allow GOD into the deepest places of our soul, we receive:
• The healing balm of HIS love
• The confidence of HIS promises
• The joy of HIS presence
• The power of HIS SPIRIT
True intimacy with GOD is both revelation and response: HE reveals, and we respond by surrender.
PERSONAL REFLECTION:
• Are you living from a place of spiritual inheritance or spiritual striving?
• What “garments” do you need to put on to reflect Christ today?
• How are you allowing God to see and shape the depths of your heart?
FINAL THOUGHTS: Our inheritance is complete, eternal, and personal.
We live it out by:
• Trusting in God’s work and timing.
• Walking in love and spiritual power.
• Embracing intimacy with God—allowing Him “in-to-me-see.”
OUR INHERITANCE THROUGH CHRIST ALONE.
John 1:12
But as many as received Him, to them He gave the right to become children of God, to those who believe in His name:
Galatians 4:6 NLT
And because we are HIS children, GOD has sent the SPIRIT of HIS SON into our hearts, prompting us to call out, “Abba, Father.”
Romans 8:16 NKJV
The Spirit Himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God
Our inheritance in CHRIST gives us direct access to our HEAVENLY FATHER…
Matthew 6:9-13
…Our Father which art in heaven, Hallowed be thy name.
10 Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done in earth, as it is in heaven.
11 Give us this day our daily bread.
12 And forgive us our debts (our sins/trespasses), as we forgive our debtors (those who have sinned/trespassed against us)
13 And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil: For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever. Amen.
Let’s Pray
LORD, thank YOU that YOU saw no man and became our SALVATION. Thank YOU that YOU have not left us alone but filled us with power, love, and a sound mind. Strengthen us in the inner man, root us in YOUR love, and fill us with the fullness of GOD. Let us live worthy of the inheritance we have in CHRIST; walking in grace, truth, and victory. May we glorify YOU with one mind and one mouth, shining as YOUR witnesses in a world desperate for hope. In JESUS' Name, Amen.
Be blessed and be a blessing,
Bill
