Summary: A sermon on the miracle of the coin in the fish’s mouth (Outline adapted from Maclaren’s Expositions of Holy Scripture and portions taken from "Peter’s Biggest Fish Story" by Ted Sutherland)

I. What happened when Christ descended? (Phil 2:9 NIV) Therefore God exalted him to the highest place and gave him the name that is above every name,(Phil 2:10 NIV) that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth,(Phil 2:11 NIV) and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.

J. When Christ gave up his rights here, a miracle happened that Peter witnessed. Christ has control over the fish of the sea.

K. Jesus did not do this miracle because they had run out of money. Jesus did not do this miracle to show off for personal gain. He did it to show Peter who he was in relation to God the Father.

L. Christ, in His lowliness, is the Everlasting Son of the Father.

3. God is able to supply all of our needs

A. (2 Pet 1:2 NIV) Grace and peace be yours in abundance through the knowledge of God and of Jesus our Lord.(2 Pet 1:3 NIV) His divine power has given us everything we need for life and godliness through our knowledge of him who called us by his own glory and goodness.

B. Notice that Jesus says, for Me and you. Not for us. He is in a different category.

C. However, Christ’s perfect life and His mighty death are for us the payment for everything we need.

D. Joe Gibbs book- Racing to Win- He had invested in a land developing company in Oklahoma. He was a partner but only in name. He never went down to inspect or see what they were doing. At the height of Joe Gibbs and the Washington Redskins success, the land developing company went bankrupt, all of the partners went bankrupt and the only one left to pay the bills was Joe Gibbs who knew nothing. He went to Oklahoma and said, “At the height of my career, at a time when I should be enjoying my success, I was wiped out. I was technically bankrupt.” He prayed about it and went to all of his creditors and said that he did not want to declare bankruptcy. He told them this and they made concession after concession. “It took more than 4 ½ years of hard work, sacrifice, and commitment, but inch by inch our family walked out from under the dark financial cloud that had enveloped us.” “The person who trusts in God will never be disappointed, in this lifetime or the world to come.”

E. We have all broken the Law. “Pay us what you owe!”

F. There is a Judgment Day!

G. What an awful day of unpaid debts there stands against us.

H. No bankruptcy. Debtor’s prison.

I. We were bankrupt. The Son comes and pays our debt and even more.

J. It is finished! Jesus said this on the cross. Archaeologists have repeatedly found this scrawled across tax receipts used in those days, indicating it also meant “paid,” Some have conjectured that many standing near the cross probably interpreted the Savior’s words as having that connotation. With sin’s account settled, our debt of guilt was indeed wiped out!

Conclusion:

A. How? Plan of salvation.

B. I don’t see it. How can this be?

This is the only miracle which does not have the results recorded. We would expect another verse that would read: “And Peter went to the sea, cast in a hook, and drew up a fish; and when he had opened its mouth, he found there a coin, and used it to pay the temple tax for himself and for Jesus.” But verse 28 is not there. Then, how do we know that the miracle took place? Because Jesus said it would! (1 Ki 8:56 NIV) Not one word has failed of all the good promises he gave.
