- Washington, DC is a city of monuments and memorials. We honor the generals, politicians, poets and statesmen who helped shape our great nation.
- Most famous monuments and memorials are on the National Mall
- The Vietnam Veterans Memorial
- The Lincoln Memorial
- The Korean War Veterans Memorial
- The National World War II Memorial
- The Jefferson Memorial honors (the author of the Declaration)
- Franklin Delano Roosevelt Memorial
(Taking the country through the depression)
- The Washington Monument (1st President)
- Tallest structure in Washington D.C. (555 ft)
- Began in 1848
- Took 30 yr. to build (lack of money & Civil War)
- When completed was the world’s tallest structure
- On the east side top pyramidal point has the inscription
- Laus Deo (Praise be to God)

The cornerstone (or foundation stone) is the first stone set in the construction of a masonry foundation, important since all other stones will be set in reference to this stone, thus determining the position of the entire structure.
