Summary: Have we learned to love God?

Is prayer a conversation with someone that we have learned to love? Let’s look at Psalm 116.

Can a loving relationship with God exist throughout our lives?

I love the Lord, because He has heard My voice and my supplications. Because He has inclined His ear to me, Therefore I will call upon Him as long as I live. (Ps 116:1-2 NKJV)

Do we pray to God when we are in desperate circumstances?

Death wrapped its ropes around me; the terrors of the grave overtook me. I saw only trouble and sorrow. Then I called on the name of the Lord: “Please, Lord, save me!” (Ps 116:3-4 NLT)

Is God merciful, preserving those who humbly rest in Him?

Yahweh is gracious and righteous. Yes, our God is merciful. Yahweh preserves the simple. I was brought low, and he saved me. Return to your rest, my soul, for Yahweh has dealt bountifully with you. (Ps 116:5-7 WEB)

Can God save us from even dire circumstances that sometimes come?

You, God, have delivered me from death, my eyes from tears, and my foot from stumbling, so I’ll walk before the Lord in the land of the living. I have remained faithful, even when I said, “I am suffering so badly!” even when I said, out of fear, “Everyone is a liar!” (Ps 116:8-11 CEB)

Do we rejoice in the cup of salvation in the presence of God’s people?

What shall I render to the Lord for all his benefits to me? I will lift up the cup of salvation and call on the name of the Lord, I will pay my vows to the Lord in the presence of all his people. (Ps 116:12-15 ESV)

Do we look around for those who are setting godly examples?

I worship you, Lord, just as my mother did, and you have rescued me from the chains of death. I will offer you a sacrifice to show how grateful I am, and I will pray. I will keep my promise to you when your people gather at your temple in Jerusalem. Shout praises to the Lord! (Ps 116:16-19 CEV)

What is our attitude towards prayer? Do we experience the peace of God?

Don’t worry about anything, but in everything, through prayer and petition with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses every thought, will guard your hearts and minds in Christ Jesus. (Phil 4:6-7 HCSB)
