Summary: Saul, discouraged after the sonsos of Belial reject his kingship, returns to life as a farmer, until the people of Jabesh Gilead need him. Then he demonstrates leadership Qualitites we can apply.

When God’s man assumes the call God has given to him, the attitude of God’s people turns against the naysayers. In other words, we need to silence the critics by doing the will of God.

Two possible mistakes that could have completely destroyed Saul:

1. Listening to the nay-sayers and allowing their words to discourage him from God’s service.

2. Negotiating with the nay-sayers and spending his time trying to convince them to come alongside and serve with him.

A man out for a walk will not reach his destination promptly or efficiently if he stops to throw rocks at every dog that barks at him.

We must be careful that we don’t allow the nay-sayers and complainers to discourage us nor that we spend too much time trying to convince the nay-sayers that we are doing the right thing.

As we study the life of Saul, we will see many things that he did wrong. He allowed his emotions to drive him. He fears losing the support of the people. He is insecure and unjust in his reign. However, once in awhile we see him doing something right, therefore we need to take a moment to recognize what he did that was right. Instead of taking credit for the victory over Nahash the Ammonite and the deliverance of the people of Jabesh Gilead, he gives glory to God. He celebrates God’s victory and allows the work of God to deal with the naysayers rather than seeking revenge. For once, Saul is secure in his calling and his position.

It is easy when things are going well and we are riding the waves of victory to feel secure.

Obedience to God brings victory.
