John 5:39 #1 JOSEPH A TYPE OF CHRIST 1-18-09
As I pointed out last time there are many types in the O.T. that point directly to the Lord Jesus Christ, there are various people, & sacrificial offerings as well as such things as, Manna, & The Temple,** & Foundation stones and cornerstones, also Jacob’s ladder, as well as many other things that are typical and pictures of the Lord Jesus.
There are over 100 incidents and details in the history of Joseph that point beyond any question to the One to come, the Lord Jesus Christ.
So today and probably next broadcast as well Lord willing, I’m going to bring a few thoughts on Joseph being a type of Christ, so I want you to pay close attention.
Listen as I read today’s text verse. John 5:39 Jesus said this;
Search the scriptures; for in them ye think ye have eternal life: and they are they which testify of me.**
Ø Joseph was well beloved of Jacob his father.
Genesis 37:3 Now Israel**-{Gen.32:28-35:10}- loved Joseph more than all his children, because he was the son of his old age:** and he made him a coat of many colours
God the Father said in Matt.17:5 this is My Beloved Son In Whom I am well pleased -
God the Father is also viewed as being “as from of old, or ancient age”
1. Jesus Father has been from all eternity,
Psalm 90:2 Before the mountains were brought forth, or ever thou hadst formed the earth and the world, even from everlasting to everlasting, thou art God.
As Joseph was the son of Jacob’s old age we’re reminded that; one of God The Fathers names is the Ancient of Days:
Daniel 7: 9 I beheld till the thrones were cast down, and the Ancient of days did sit, whose garment was white as snow, and the hair of his head like the pure wool:
Ø Joseph was sent by his father to see about his brethren and the flocks, so he left his father’s house to see his brethren and how the flocks was doing.
Genesis 37:12-17 12And his brethren went to feed their father’s flock in Shechem. * [diligence" early in the morning in fellowship] 13And Israel said unto Joseph, Do not thy brethren feed the flock in Shechem? come, and I will send thee unto them.**notice -Joseph is being sent of his father,
God the Father also sent His Son Jesus to His brethren, the Jews. Jesus said in,
Matthew 15:24 But he answered and said, I am not sent but unto the lost sheep of the house of Israel.]
{Joseph answers}-13 b --And he said to him, Here am I. Notice; Joseph was willing to go]
JESUS said in John 5:29--because I seek not mine own will, but the will of the Father which hath sent me. –Israel says to Joseph-14And he said to him, Go, I pray thee, see whether it be well with thy brethren, and well with the flocks; and bring me word again.
So he sent him out of the vale of Hebron, and he came to Shechem. 15And a certain man found him, and, behold, he was wandering in the field: **[MATT.13:38] and the man asked- --him, saying, What seekest thou? Jesus said in [Lk. 19:10 - the son of man is come to seek and to saved that whice was lost]
16And he said, I seek my brethren: tell me, I pray thee, where they feed their flocks. 17And the man said, They are departed hence; ** notice-
[THEY WERE NOT WHERE THEY WERE SUPPOSE TO BE, and the Jews are not where their suppose to be today] for I heard them say, Let us go to Dothan. And Joseph went after his brethren, and found them in Dothan. [Dothan a picture of the law]
Galatians 4:4-5 4But when the fulness of the time was come, God sent forth his Son, made of a woman, made under the law, 5To redeem them that were under the law,
Ø Keep in mind that Joseph was the beloved, & obedient, and innocent son of his father Jacob, he was envied by his brethren, they treated him badly, they sold him, and gave him over to the Gentiles; & so was Jesus.
Joseph had two names, one given to him when he was born- Joseph
1. The name {Joseph} given to him by his father Jacob means “adding to” or “increasing.”
2. The first Adam was the great subtractor, the last Adam, the Lord Jesus is the great multiplier.
Romans 5:14-15 Nevertheless death reigned from Adam to Moses, even over them that had not sinned after the similitude of Adam’s transgression, who is the figure of him that was to come. 15But not as the offence, so also is the free gift. For if through the offence of one many be dead, much more the grace of God, and the gift by grace, which is by one man, Jesus Christ, hath abounded unto many.
