John 5:39 #1 JOSEPH A TYPE OF CHRIST 1-18-09
As I pointed out last time there are many types in the O.T. that point directly to the Lord Jesus Christ, there are various people, & sacrificial offerings as well as such things as, Manna, & The Temple,** & Foundation stones and cornerstones, also Jacob’s ladder, as well as many other things that are typical and pictures of the Lord Jesus.
There are over 100 incidents and details in the history of Joseph that point beyond any question to the One to come, the Lord Jesus Christ.
So today and probably next broadcast as well Lord willing, I’m going to bring a few thoughts on Joseph being a type of Christ, so I want you to pay close attention.
Listen as I read today’s text verse. John 5:39 Jesus said this;
Search the scriptures; for in them ye think ye have eternal life: and they are they which testify of me.**
Ø Joseph was well beloved of Jacob his father.
Genesis 37:3 Now Israel**-{Gen.32:28-35:10}- loved Joseph more than all his children, because he was the son of his old age:** and he made him a coat of many colours
God the Father said in Matt.17:5 this is My Beloved Son In Whom I am well pleased -
God the Father is also viewed as being “as from of old, or ancient age”
1. Jesus Father has been from all eternity,
Psalm 90:2 Before the mountains were brought forth, or ever thou hadst formed the earth and the world, even from everlasting to everlasting, thou art God.
As Joseph was the son of Jacob’s old age we’re reminded that; one of God The Fathers names is the Ancient of Days:
Daniel 7: 9 I beheld till the thrones were cast down, and the Ancient of days did sit, whose garment was white as snow, and the hair of his head like the pure wool:
Ø Joseph was sent by his father to see about his brethren and the flocks, so he left his father’s house to see his brethren and how the flocks was doing.
Genesis 37:12-17 12And his brethren went to feed their father’s flock in Shechem. * [diligence" early in the morning in fellowship] 13And Israel said unto Joseph, Do not thy brethren feed the flock in Shechem? come, and I will send thee unto them.**notice -Joseph is being sent of his father,
God the Father also sent His Son Jesus to His brethren, the Jews. Jesus said in,
Matthew 15:24 But he answered and said, I am not sent but unto the lost sheep of the house of Israel.]
{Joseph answers}-13 b --And he said to him, Here am I. Notice; Joseph was willing to go]
JESUS said in John 5:29--because I seek not mine own will, but the will of the Father which hath sent me. –Israel says to Joseph-14And he said to him, Go, I pray thee, see whether it be well with thy brethren, and well with the flocks; and bring me word again.
So he sent him out of the vale of Hebron, and he came to Shechem. 15And a certain man found him, and, behold, he was wandering in the field: **[MATT.13:38] and the man asked- --him, saying, What seekest thou? Jesus said in [Lk. 19:10 - the son of man is come to seek and to saved that whice was lost]
16And he said, I seek my brethren: tell me, I pray thee, where they feed their flocks. 17And the man said, They are departed hence; ** notice-
[THEY WERE NOT WHERE THEY WERE SUPPOSE TO BE, and the Jews are not where their suppose to be today] for I heard them say, Let us go to Dothan. And Joseph went after his brethren, and found them in Dothan. [Dothan a picture of the law]
Galatians 4:4-5 4But when the fulness of the time was come, God sent forth his Son, made of a woman, made under the law, 5To redeem them that were under the law,
Ø Keep in mind that Joseph was the beloved, & obedient, and innocent son of his father Jacob, he was envied by his brethren, they treated him badly, they sold him, and gave him over to the Gentiles; & so was Jesus.
Joseph had two names, one given to him when he was born- Joseph
1. The name {Joseph} given to him by his father Jacob means “adding to” or “increasing.”
2. The first Adam was the great subtractor, the last Adam, the Lord Jesus is the great multiplier.
Romans 5:14-15 Nevertheless death reigned from Adam to Moses, even over them that had not sinned after the similitude of Adam’s transgression, who is the figure of him that was to come. 15But not as the offence, so also is the free gift. For if through the offence of one many be dead, much more the grace of God, and the gift by grace, which is by one man, Jesus Christ, hath abounded unto many.
Speaking of Himself, Jesus said in:
John 12:24 “Verily, verily, I say unto you, Except a corn of wheat fall into the ground and die, it abideth alone: but if it die, it bringeth forth much fruit.”
B. The other name given to Joseph was when he was exalted to the throne of Egypt.
Genesis 41:42-45 “And Pharaoh took off his ring from his hand, and put it upon Joseph’s hand…And he made him to ride in the second chariot which he had; and they cried before him, Bow the knee: and he made him ruler over all the land of Egypt. And Pharaoh called Joseph’s name Zaphnath-paaneah…”
3. Zaphnath-paaneah means “revealer of secrets.”
Joseph had reviled to Pharaoh the interpretation of Pharaohs dream, to do with the drought years that were coming, and as we know, Pharaoh put Joseph to oversee the well fare of Egypt. Joseph was ruler of all Egypt; only Pharaoh himself was above him.
Remember; “Zaphnath-paaneah” Josephs Egyptian name means “revealer of secrets.” And there’s coming a day in the future as Jesus rules on His Throne Nothing shall be hid in that day, Ecclesiastes 12: 14 For God shall bring every work into judgment, with every secret thing, whether it be good, or whether it be evil.
Ø Joseph brethren hated Him for Who He was, his father’s favorite son, and a dreamer and revealer of secrets,
Genesis 37:3-4 Now Israel loved Joseph more than all his children, because he was the son of his old age: and he made him a coat of many colours. 4And when his brethren saw that their father loved him more than all his brethren, they hated him, and could not speak peaceably unto him
He caused them to hate him even more when he came with his prophetic dreams.
1. The dreams Joseph related to his brethren were a source of jealousy and anger to them.
Genesis 37:5-11 And Joseph dreamed a dream, and he told it his brethren: and they hated him yet the more. 6And he said unto them, Hear, I pray you, this dream which I have dreamed: 7For, behold, we were binding sheaves in the field, and, lo, my sheaf arose, and also stood upright; and, behold, your sheaves stood round about, and made obeisance to my sheaf.
8And his brethren said to him, Shalt thou indeed reign over us? or shalt thou indeed have dominion over us? And they hated him yet the more for his dreams, and for his words.
First Joseph saw his brethren as sheaves of wheat in the field, bowing down to him, a prophetic vision that would be fulfilled in Egypt.
And when King Jesus sits on His Throne in the Kingdom reign and beyond, it will come to pass on this earth.
9And he dreamed yet another dream, and told it his brethren, and said, Behold, I have dreamed a dream more; and, behold, the sun and the moon and the eleven stars made obeisance to me.
10And he told it to his father, and to his brethren: and his father rebuked him, and said unto him, What is this dream that thou hast dreamed? Shall I and thy mother and thy brethren indeed come to bow down ourselves to thee to the earth? 11And his brethren envied him; but his father observed the saying.
We see here two dreams which speak of two separate areas for the setting of the two separate dreams – both dreams prefigures Christ’s Two Sovereign Reigns.
1. The first was on earth.
a. Joseph saw sheaves of grain in the field, bowing down to him
b. The field is the world-matt. 13:38
c. The Dream deals with earthly sovereignty
2. The second dream was in the heavens
a. He saw the sun, moon and eleven stars making obeisance to him
b. This dream deals with the sovereignty in the heavens
Joseph dreams looks forward to the Lord Jesus Christ Who will reign as sovereign Lord and King; even today He is Lord in heaven and we that are saved gladly own Him as our Lord and King now.
In Josephs 2nd dream, The sun, moon and stars point to His heavenly people, the church, and the redeemed of all ages. As well as a reference to Israel in Rev. 12:
Joseph’s brethren never realized that one day they would be bowing to Joseph, they never realized the reality of his powerful position that was to come in Egypt. - Egypt a type of the world.
Even today the Jews for the most part don’t recognize who Jesus is, they don’t understand that one day they’ll receive Him gladly with broken hearts because of the way they treated Him when He came the 1st time.
Zechariah 12:10 –11 And I will pour upon the house of David, and upon the inhabitants of Jerusalem, the spirit of grace and of supplications: and they shall look upon me whom they have pierced, and they shall mourn for him, as one mourneth for his only son, and shall be in bitterness for him, as one that is in bitterness for his firstborn. 11In that day shall there be a great mourning in Jerusalem,
Ø One day all heaven and earth will bow the knee to King Jesus:
Philippians 2: 9-11 Wherefore God also hath highly exalted him, and given him a name which is above every name: 10That at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of things in heaven, and things in earth, and things under the earth; 11And that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.
All the hard core and high minded and proud sinners today may refuse to bow to Him, but one day every knee is gonna bow, even Satan himself.
Genesis 37: 8 And his brethren said to him, Shalt thou indeed reign over us? or shalt thou indeed have dominion over us? And they hated him yet the more for his dreams, and for his words.
Ø Joseph’s brethren despised him.
Jesus too was rejected & despised of His Jewish brethren.
John 1:11 He came unto his own, and his own received him not.
John 19:15 But they cried out, Away with him, away with him, crucify him.
What a prediction of the hatred of Jesus’ enemies. They hated Him because of what He claimed Himself to be:
John 5:18 “Therefore the Jews sought the more to kill him, because he not only had broken the Sabbath, but said also that God was his Father, making himself equal with God.”
