Summary: For whom did Jesus die, all or just a special few? Are gender roles a curse or blessing? Let's find out in 1 Timothy 2.

Who should we pray for? Did Jesus die just for an elect few, or everyone? Are gender roles oppressive or a blessing? Let’s find out in 1 Timothy 2.

Should we pray for just a few or all people, even national leaders? Why?

I urge you, first of all, to pray for all people. Ask God to help them; intercede on their behalf, and give thanks for them. Pray this way for kings and all who are in authority so that we can live peaceful and quiet lives marked by godliness and dignity. (1 Timothy 2:1-2 NLT)

Does God want even crooked politicians to be saved? Does God really want just a few saved or all?

For this is good and acceptable in the sight of God our Savior, who desires all people to be saved and come to full knowledge of the truth. (1 Timothy 2:3-4 WEB)

For whom did Jesus die, just an elect few, or to set all people free?

For there is one God and one Mediator between God and men, the Man Christ Jesus, who gave Himself a ransom for all, to be testified in due time, (1 Timothy 2:5-6 NKJV)

Was Paul sent to tell non-Jewish people groups about faith and truth?

This is why God chose me to be a preacher and an apostle of the good news. I am telling the truth. I am not lying. God sent me to teach the Gentiles about faith and truth. (1 Timothy 2:7 CEV)

What was God’s desire for men? What did they do with their hands as they prayed?

I desire then that in every place the men should pray, lifting holy hands without anger or quarreling; (1 Timothy 2:8 ESV)

What is God’s desire for women? What is more important, fashion or good works?

Also, the women are to dress themselves in modest clothing, with decency and good sense, not with elaborate hairstyles, gold, pearls, or expensive apparel, but with good works, as is proper for women who affirm that they worship God. (1 Timothy 2:9-10 HCSB)

If women can be prophets (Acts 2:16–18; 21:9-10; 1 Corinthians 11:4–5) and evangelists (John 4:39-42), may they also do so publicly by preaching in the church?

A woman must quietly receive instruction with entire submissiveness. But I do not allow a woman to teach or to exercise authority over a man, but to remain quiet. (1 Timothy 2:11-12 NASB)

Was this just a local situation or does it go back to a broader principle from creation?

For Adam was formed first, then Eve, and it was not Adam who was deceived. It was the woman who was deceived and became disobedient, (1 Timothy 2:13-14 ISV)

Could this next verse be referring to “the” childbearing, the incarnation or birth of Jesus?

Notwithstanding she shall be saved in [literally “the”] childbearing, if they continue in faith and charity and holiness with sobriety. (1 Timothy 2:15 KJV)

Who should we pray for? Did Jesus die just for an elect few, or everyone? Are gender roles oppressive or a blessing? You decide!
